This essay examines the role of feedback in improving team communication and performance from the perspective of a hospital catering manager. Drawing on human resource management literature, the paper defines feedback, outlines its core benefits β including motivation, relationship-building, and goal alignment β and contrasts formal and informal feedback methods. Special attention is given to millennial employees, who prefer brief, continuous "microfeedback" over traditional performance reviews, including Twitter-based assessments limited to 140 characters. The paper argues that tailoring feedback style to the workforce is essential for fostering employee development and organizational success.
As a catering manager in a hospital, one of my key responsibilities is to bolster every employee's performance. Supervisors in this role have an active part in managing associate performance and development. My employees need to know how their individual efforts contribute to the hospital's overall success and to their personal career growth.
Feedback is the provision of specific information about an employee's performance based on observations by a supervisor. It may include positive recognition or constructive criticism. According to Matt Argano's Effective Feedback in the Workplace (Society of Human Resource Management, 2006), feedback provides a connection between the employee's goals and the company's goals, and communicates performance standards clearly.
Feedback also fosters open communication, cultivates the sharing of ideas and suggestions, and assists in identifying training needs. As the catering manager at a hospital, I use both formal and informal feedback with my employees. Formal feedback includes coaching or counseling sessions, while informal feedback may be as simple as recognizing an associate for going the extra mile. Positive feedback can strengthen an associate's self-confidence, commitment, and dedication to the organization.
The key benefits of providing consistent feedback include the following:
"Microfeedback and continuous assessment for younger workers"
Tailoring feedback to the individual employee β whether through formal reviews, informal recognition, or microfeedback β is essential for building a high-performing hospital catering team. By understanding what motivates different employees and adapting communication accordingly, managers can strengthen both individual development and overall organizational success.
