Betty's Smith 1943 novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn can be read as a war-time novel situated in a landscape of nostalgia and longing. In this sense, it is often viewed as a sentimental work that appeals more strongly to the emotions and the heart than it does to the head or to the intellect, in a way that a more grotesque work, such as something by Flannery O'Connor of the same era, for instance, might do. Bernard Malamud, a Natural Writer
Bernard Malamud, was the oldest son of an immigrant grocer. His parents, Max and Bertha, were ussian-Jewish immigrants and would frequently work late, and Bernard would spend many hours in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn absorbing the atmosphere of the area. Times were different then and he was allowed to stay out late as a child, and "wander in the neighbor hood." He would skate on the streets, go sledding with friends, climb trees and play games late into the evening. His first trip to Coney Island allowed him to see the ocean, and he fell in love with its movements (Biography esource Center, 2004).
Malamud also enjoyed literature. He attended Erasmus Hall High School where he began to write. He made good grades and his stories and drawings began to be printed in the high school magazine.

Unlike many of his works, which overtly differentiate between women of different classes and different occupations, this image in the photo is very every-woman. 1950's through to the 1970's, immigration was a way out for many of Ireland's people due to a shift in the economy after the war for independence. Immigration was not confined to the educated classes. People from the richest and poorest places in Ireland immigrated in large numbers during this time. Socially, Ireland was a drab and morose place to be because of its strict conservatism. Many of the nation's young longed to get out. People are fascinated by success stories, especially the rags-to-riches stories wherein someone starts from nothing and, through a combination of hard work and extraordinary luck, becomes famous and rich. In his book Outliers: The Story of Success, author Malcolm Gladwell profiles a number of individuals who have been tremendously successful. Some of the names are well-known: Bill Gates, the Beatles, obert Oppenheimer. The stories of their success are much more complex and interesting than one could ever imagine. Gladwell also provides plenty of examples of people for whom success has been elusive. They appear to have much in their favor and yet circumstances such as culture, class, family and even date of birth relegated them to an existence of missed opportunities and mediocrity. Talent, hard work and luck are certainly components of success but, as Gladwell shows, the back story is often richer and more complicated.
