This essay responds to a set of thirteen separate readings on American literature, including works by Jonathan Edwards, Ben Franklin, Washington Irving, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Philip Freneau, Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. It also includes two five-hundred-word essays, one about Nathaniel Hawthorne's story "Young Goodman Brown" and the other about Washington Irving's story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". In all cases, historical information about the period of American history before the Civil War is adduced to help interpret the literary works.

A descriptive essay on Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven." In the essay, it is explained how the theme of the loss of a beautiful woman and insanity can be found in other Poe works such as "Annabel Lee" and "Ligeia" and "The Tell-Tale Heart." Additionally, it is argued that if Poe was a beverage, he would be absinthe due to the maddening effects often attributed to the drink.

A brief analysis of eight different poems written by Poe, Dickinson, Blake, Owen, Cummings, Thomas, and Silverstein. In each of the poems, a literary device was identified and it was demonstrated how one of the poems made use of the device. Devices included imagery, repetition, tone, style, metaphor, and theme.

This essay examines many of the works of Edgar Allan Poe as they contribute to his ability to communicate to his audience. The essay focuses on the literary techniques of Poe such as use of narrative and dialogue. Poe's use of fear and terror is also examined in this essay as an effective way of communicating his message.
