What is Debate?

Debate, as an academic subject within communications, encompasses the structured examination of contested issues through reasoned argument, evidence, and rebuttal. It appears across disciplines ranging from political science and law to ethics, linguistics, and cultural studies. What makes debate academically compelling is its demand for both analytical rigor and rhetorical precision — students must not only understand an issue but construct and defend a position against opposing claims. The breadth of topics treated under this heading reflects how fundamental argumentation is to academic inquiry itself, touching on moral permissibility, policy, identity, economics, and justice.

Papers on this topic take a wide range of approaches. Some engage directly with ethical debates, examining questions such as the moral permissibility of abortion or the role race plays in the death penalty. Others are comparative, weighing the influence of historical events or contrasting cultural and religious frameworks such as Mahayana Buddhism or restorative justice models. Case-study approaches appear alongside policy analyses, including discussions of financing professional sports arenas or the international economics of trade. Research design and methodology also feature prominently, with some papers focusing on how to propose and justify an appropriate method for investigating a debatable question.

A strong essay on a debate topic requires a clearly scoped thesis that takes a defensible position rather than merely summarizing multiple viewpoints. Evidence drawn from credible primary and secondary sources — legal cases, scholarly research, historical records, or policy documents — carries the most weight. One common pitfall is treating both sides of an issue as equally supported when the available evidence actually favors one position; a well-argued essay acknowledges counterarguments but does not artificially balance an uneven evidentiary record.

Baseball and the American Character
Baseball and the American Character "America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again, but baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that was once good and could be good again" (James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams). Introduction Why is baseball linked to the American cultural experience and why do some say baseball is a reflection of American exceptionalism? Is baseball still America's national game because the American culture needs a pastoral outlet as an escape from big city pollution, political corruption and crime? If that is not true, then why is baseball so important to the culture of America? These questions and others will be brought up in this essay.

Democracy / Liberty Is Direct Democracy Desirable
Is direct democracy desirable and/or possible today? The question is addressed first theoretically, with reference to Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws, which actually categorizes direct democracy as one of the corruptions into which a democratic system can descend, by an insistence on too much egalitarianism. Direct democracy is considered as an ideal, which is desirable insofar as it offers a critique of contemporary politics, but whose possibility is limited by whether or not it can be feasibly implemented. Two contemporary case studies are brought in to examine the question further: the experiment with internet-organized direct democracy in Estonia, and the experiment with social-media-inspired direct democracy in the Occupy Wall Street movement. Paper then offers an answer to a second essay question about conceptions of freedom in contemporary liberal democracy.

Global Warming Is Real and Happening When
Certain issues such as global warming and tax cuts for certain incomes, might seem like open and closed issues for certain civilians. However, the reality is that for others, the situation is far more nuanced than it appears. Examining both sides of these issues can lead to a deeper understanding of the factors which impact them and the need for confronting them with a greater level of strategy and sensitivity while paying attention to the bigger picture.
