What is Definition?

Ironically, the definition of the term “definition essay” is not very specific.  Definition essays are short pieces of writing on a particular topic.  However, not every essay on a topic can be properly labeled a definition essay.  Instead, a definition essay is an attempt to describe the topic thoroughly enough for the reader to understand it very well and might be compared to an encyclopedia entry for the topic.  Any of our example essays could provide a good start on a definition essay about the topic.  However, we have collected a sample of our best definition essays and included them below to help you explore the genre.

Feminist advocacy and media representation in contemporary American culture
Although there is not absolute consensus, popular writings about feminism suggest that there have been three waves of feminism: (1) The first wave of feminism is said to have occurred in the 18th through the 20th centuries and was characterized by a focus on suffrage; (2) The decades spanning 1960 to 1990 are said to encompass the second wave of feminism, to which a concern with cultural and legal gender inequality is attributed; and (3) The third wave of feminism began in the early 1990s partly in response to the conservative backlash the second wave engendered, and partly in recognition of the unrealized goals of the second wave of feminism up to that time. This third wave of feminism made salient a more subjective voice that pointed at the intersection of race and gender with greater resolve than would have been possible when civil rights issues garnered the lions' share of public attention.

When family members show true care and respect for each other, resolve their family conflicts in a polite and friendly manner, show a high level of resilience in bitter circumstances, and ensure an effective communication without distance and time constraints, the members live like a happy and ideal family. Family happiness gets spoiled when hatred, mistrust, arguments, and criticism take the place of love, care, and mutual understanding.

Labor relations today involve many sensitive and complex issues. Public and private sector unions, collective bargaining, and fair wage and benefit packages are of great importance to employees.
