What is Disability?

Disability is a broad subject that spans health sciences, education, social policy, and psychology, making it a common topic across courses in nursing, special education, human development, and public health. It invites academic examination because it sits at the intersection of medical classification, social identity, and legal rights. Students are asked to analyze how disability is defined, how it affects individuals across the lifespan, and how institutions respond to the needs of people living with physical, cognitive, or developmental conditions.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take a clinical or case-study focus, examining specific conditions such as Tourette's syndrome, mental retardation in adults, or physical injuries like Achilles tendon rupture. Others engage with policy and legal frameworks, including Social Security Income eligibility and landmark cases such as Huber v. Wal-Mart Stores. Educational approaches appear frequently as well, analyzing grading methods in special education and the broader landscape of disability education. More reflective and sociological angles also surface, exploring personal attitudes toward disability and how it intersects with ethnicity and gender.

A strong essay on disability benefits from a clearly scoped thesis that commits to one dimension — medical, legal, educational, or social — rather than attempting to cover all at once. Evidence drawn from clinical research, policy documents, or well-documented case studies carries the most weight. A common pitfall is treating disability as a uniform experience; effective writing acknowledges that conditions, contexts, and individual circumstances vary significantly and shapes its argument accordingly.

The paper considers three ethical issues related to older age: anti-aging medications and technology, care giving and receiving, and elder abuse. The central argument is that old age is in the future for most of us; or at least for those of us lucky enough to live long enough to become old. Communication and caregiver grief in end-of-life Alzheimer's care
My significant learning experience related to end of life care surrounded two particular issues: communication with the patient and family members and the concept of caregiver grief. This internal grief fits well with the communication issue because communication with the client and family are external, while caregiver grief is internal. The focal point of the assignment, however, is to examine the way in which I applied these learning issues to my practice, nursing a patient with Alzheimer's disease at the end of life and then analyzing my own communication skills when interacting with the patient and family members. Reflection is defined as a process of reviewing an experience of practice in order to describe, analyse and evaluate to inform externally and develop internally regarding a practice, theory, or set of events.

My sister's borderline personality disorder and its impact
A person in my life who struggles with one of the neuropsychological disorders that we have studied in this module is my sister who has borderline personality disorder. Some clinicians have misdiagnosed her with bipolar disease and apparently that's a common mistake, both conditions do share unstable moods and impulsive actions (Kreger, 2010). Both conditions can experience psychotic behavior though the individuals with bipolar disorder generally have the same manifestations, "Manic individuals experience elevated levels of euphoria. Self esteem and feelings of grandiosity are abnormally elevated and may result in psychoses such as delusions and hallucinations…The individual may show poor judgment in spending money, may become hypersexual, or may make poor business commitments. Other hallmarks of mania are excessive rapid, loud and pressurized speech. The manic person quickly skips from one topic to another and is easily distracted both when thinking and when performing tasks" (Takahashi, 2006).
