What is Discussion?

Discussion as an academic form appears across virtually every discipline, from English composition and the humanities to business, science, and social policy courses. Rather than arguing a single thesis from the outset, discussion-based writing asks students to examine a topic from multiple perspectives, weigh competing ideas, and reach a considered understanding. This makes it a foundational skill in higher education, since the ability to present a case clearly, engage with contrasting viewpoints, and find common ground between them is valued in nearly every field of study.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a wide range of approaches and subject areas. Some take a reaction or response format, such as engaging with a school board meeting or reflecting on readings like Maus I and II and what they reveal about humanity. Others apply comparative analysis, contrasting works of art or examining shifts in pop culture over time. Still others are structured as case analyses, audits, or project reports covering areas such as labor and union studies, accident investigation, staff motivation during organisational change, and barriers to institutional success. This variety shows how the discussion format adapts to almost any academic context.

A strong discussion essay begins with a clearly scoped focus rather than an overly broad premise. Evidence drawn from the specific case, text, or event under review carries the most weight, and connecting individual examples to larger ideas or terms from the course strengthens the analysis. The most common pitfall is summarizing instead of analyzing — restating what happened rather than explaining what it means and why it matters.

Romeo and Juliet: Teenage Love, Impulsiveness, and Tragedy
Love had the same meaning in the fifteenth century as it has today. However, when it came to the role it played in society and most importantly, in the formation of its basic unit, family, it was an entirely different matter. The love between Romeo and Juliet was similar to any relationship based on love at first sight between two teenagers today. Its characteristics were: impulsiveness, lack of second thoughts or pondering and rash decisions. It will end up in the protagonists' death through suicide because of some internal as well as some external factors. The young couple was blinded by love, eager to escape parental authority and egocentric. The parents were slaves to the moral and prejudices of their time. The odds were altogether, against such unions.

Memory and Witness Retrieval: Annotated Bibliography
This research article presents the methodological construct, observable results and wider implications of an experimental inquiry conducted to test a phenomenon known as retrieval-enhanced suggestibility (RES). Coined to describe the counterintuitive trend of eyewitness suggestibility increasing after repeated retrieval attempts, here the concept of RES was tested using a four-part experimental structure designed to examine the link between multiple retrieval attempts and witness suggestibility to the presentation of subsequent misinformation. The research team constructed four spate experimental designs to test three variables: number of initial tests conducted (0, 1, 3, 5, and 6 across the various experiments), delay separating the initial and final tests (i.e., 30 min or 1 week), and presence of testing manipulation (i.e., nontested vs. tested) occurring between or within subjects. As the first published study on RES to integrate both the between- and within-subjects design, this article presents an abundance of previously unreported information on memory retrieval and witness suggestibility, ultimately concluding across all four experimental designs that repeated testing of memory increased eyewitness suggestibility to later presentation of misinformation.
