Oprah Winfrey: Life, career, and cultural impact
This paper is on Oprah. From the early years, Oprah had to face many difficulties in her life. Her mother had left her in the care of her grandmother who had been living a life of poverty on the farm which was on the rural outskirts of Kosciusko, Mississippi. This deprived her from the love and care of her mother in her early years as a child. Moreover, her grandmother did not have enough income to ensure for her a life without poverty.
Snow White's naivety and vulnerability in Disney's film adaptation
In this paper, the extent to which Snow White was oblivious and naive is analysed. The texts used for this comparison are Anne Sexton's poem--"Snow White and the Seven Dwarves," Brothers Grimm's "Little Snow White," and the 1937 Disney animated film. It is argued that Snow White's naivete and obliviousness is only a valid excuse to a certain point and that she is stubborn, selfish, and stupid--three factors that drive her decisions throughout the poem, short story, and film.
Codes of Ethics in Psychology
This is a five page paper about ethics. The first four pages offer five ethical codes that apply to the social sciences, and to psychology in particular. Using the APA guide as a reference, this section addresses such ethical issues as privacy, confidentiality, and honesty. The last page applies that code of ethics to television, and refers to the Newton Minow speech delivered in 1961 about the "vast wasteland."
Secret the Power by Rhonda Byrne
Rhonda Byrne's The Secret: The Power (2010) is truly an incredibly bad book, simplistic, repetitive and divorced from real history, politics or economics, yet it has sold 19 million copies. A cynic might say that the real secret to wealth is writing a bestselling book that millions will buy. Her 2006 book The Secret sold more over 19 million copies and was translated into 46 languages, and she was also a guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show and many others on the daytime TV chat circuit. Like all self-help writers, she has a talent for publishing the same advice repeatedly in new books that claim to offer even greater insights than past philosophers and religious teachers and in 2007 Byrne wrote The Secret Gratitude Book, followed a year later by The Secret: Daily Teachings. Her latest offering is about 250 pages long and quickly appeared on the bestseller lists, which indicates the type of strong cult following that all publishers desire. Byrne's central thesis is that human beings can change their entire lives and have everything they want simply by wishing for it, including money, wealth, happiness, careers, and romantic relationships.
