About This Topic

Explanation as a mode of academic writing appears across virtually every discipline, from biology and economics to history, theology, and technology. Rather than arguing a position or narrating events, explanatory writing prioritizes clarity — breaking down complex systems, processes, or phenomena so that a reader can genuinely understand them. This makes it a foundational skill in English composition courses, where students learn to present information in structured, accessible ways regardless of subject matter.

The papers collected here reflect the broad range of contexts in which explanation is required. Some take a scientific or technical approach, such as examining how LASIK surgery works or identifying the symptoms caused by exposure to mercury and arsenic. Others explain organizational structures, business strategies, or economic paradoxes like the diamond-water problem studied in microeconomics. Still others address social, legal, or cultural subjects — from reciprocity within the Iroquois Confederacy to the traditions of the Catholic faith — demonstrating that explanation adapts to whatever situation or subject demands it.

A strong explanatory essay begins with a clear sense of scope: identify precisely what needs to be understood and why it matters to the reader. Evidence carries weight when it is specific and well-sourced — definitions, data, examples, and step-by-step reasoning all serve the goal of genuine understanding. The most common pitfall is confusing explanation with argument; an explanatory thesis states what something is or how it works, not what the writer believes about it. Keeping that distinction sharp ensures the writing stays focused on illuminating rather than persuading.

Health Policy Discussion Responses Post Health Policy
The discussion post authored by L.N. concerning health policy and its various influences was well-written and informative, providing a clear definition of the term while also providing tangible examples of health policies as they currently exist. By beginning the discussion with a scholarly reference to the definition of health policy constructed by Williams and Torrens in 2008, which classifies the term as a collection of targeted laws, entitlement benefits, regulatory practices, administrative edicts, and the various participatory conditions applied to patients, this post immediately establishes the focus of the subsequently presented information. I especially enjoyed how the discussion shifted to the real-world implications of a seemingly abstract discussion of health policy as a concept, because in reality the application of health policy affects hundreds of millions of Americans in terms of patient acuity. By referencing the cooperative dynamic which exists between publically accountable policymakers on the local, state and federal legislative level, and the private interest groups who employ legions of lobbyists to manipulate the health policy process, L.N. is successful in capturing the reader's interest through a direct appeal to their sense of fairness and logic – which is an especially effective rhetorical strategy.

The Marketing Strategy Problem - In 1-2 pages, describe the Use course concepts in your explanation. For example, from the organization's perspective and the consumer's perspective, explain whether this problem is one of affect and cognition, behavior, environment, or a combination. The company that is under consideration here is SABMiller Inc. the current situation with SabMiller Inc is that the company has consolidated its efforts and has focused on a merger and acquisition strategy in order to capture the market and in order to develop its product line in accordance with local tastes. However recently the situation is pointing to stagnancy in its growth as its Miller operations in America are not growing as expected by the management. Moreover the company is facing difficulties in developed country markets as these are already saturated. And at the same time it has not been able to make inroads into young markets such as China and India, markets which account for less than 10 percent of the portion of its revenues. (SABMiller Plc , 2011) The problem here is a combination of affect and environment, where beer consumers generally tend to have an affinity for the beer brand they are used to and do not like to change their brands. They are used to the taste, and associating that particular brand of beer to various life events tend to be loyal to the brand. Moreover, as SABMiller beers in new markets are priced at par with local brands, consumers don't even venture a trial and this is what is pulling the brand down to some extent. From the organization's perspective this problem is turning out to be that of consumer behavior and the environment where the recession has led people to curtail their consumption of luxury
