This paper is an annotated bibliography of the Dark Ages. The three sources considered are works of literature from that time period. Their bibliographical information is presented first, along with information about where they came from and why they were seen as valuable during the times in which they were written.

In this paper, we are going to be looking at how morals, values and customs are applied in Beowulf. The way that this will be accomplished is to focus on specific attributes and the way they are relevant to the different characters. Once this takes place, is when we can provide specific insights as to how this is influencing social norms.

Is Beowulf right or wrong? Is Hrothgar weak or strong? Are these two characters Christian or pagan? Is Wealhtheow wretched or distinguished? Is Unferth a fool or an intelligent coward?

Literature can have a powerful influence on the way that individuals view such characteristics such as bravery and honor. In "The Epic of Gilgamesh," "The Iliad," "Beowulf," and "King Arthur" we are exposed to different characters that all embody varying degrees of honor and heroism. "The Canterbury Tales" and "The Wife of Bath" depict characters who are very unlike their traditional roles for their time periods.

Having been written somewhere between the 8th and 11th centuries and being one of the best known heroic epic poems, Beowulf certainly makes more recent stories appear less important.
