About This Topic

Korea is a subject that spans multiple academic disciplines, making it a common focus in history, political science, international relations, cultural studies, and personal narrative writing courses. Its modern history — shaped by colonialism, division, and rapid economic development — gives students rich material to examine questions of national identity, geopolitics, and cultural transformation. The country's position within East Asia, particularly its relationships with Japan and China, adds layers of regional complexity that make Korea analytically compelling across a wide range of course contexts.

The papers archived on this topic reflect genuinely diverse approaches. Some take a historical angle, examining Korea's modern trajectory and the legacy of the Korean War. Others focus on international relations, including nuclear tensions with North Korea and trade disputes such as beef import conflicts between Korea and the United States. Corporate case studies, particularly around companies like Samsung, represent a business-oriented strand. Cultural and identity essays explore what it means to be Korean or Korean American, while personal narratives address individual experience through a Korean lens, including reflections on national worldview and life change.

A strong essay on Korea benefits from a clearly scoped thesis — broad topics like "Korean history" or "Korean culture" need to be narrowed to a specific period, policy, conflict, or cultural dynamic. Evidence drawn from credible historical sources, policy documents, or scholarly analysis of regional relationships tends to carry the most weight in academic writing. The most common pitfall is treating North and South Korea as interchangeable; distinguishing between them precisely and purposefully is essential to any credible argument.

Campus Safety Over the Past
Colleges and legal regulations should balance privacy and safety in order to prevent future massacres on campus after the incident that occurred at Virginia Tech which has altered their mental health system. The incident caused thirty-two students and faculty to be shot dead, leaving seventeen people injured and the shooter killing himself (Mass Shooting at Virginia Tech, 2007). This all could have been prevented if the law would have let the school check into the shooter's life. Before the shootings happened, two females complained to campus security that the shooter was stalking them but yet nothing was done due to the fact that Virginia Tech mental health professionals and campus security are limited into prying into the students' lives (Gammage and Burling. 2007). This is because the laws protect privacy rights for students. However, if those laws were changed to prevent this or future incidents, those people would be alive today and the shooter would have received the help that he needed in the first place. On the other hand, college campuses have their own society where they handle their issues their way. With that, who is to blame, Virginia Tech or the laws? In this paper, it will be argued that colleges and legal regulations should balance privacy and safety in order to prevent future massacres on campus because Virginia Tech has altered campus mental health system.

The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention
In his book, The World Is Flat, Thomas Friedman argues in favor of what he calls "The Dell Theory of Conflict Prevention." William Duiker is not so sure about the trend toward globalization, saying that it may be offset by a simultaneous trend toward fragmentation. The following paper explains that whilst Friedman's argument has its merits, Druicker's assessment seems to be more accurate. Whilst the world is becoming increasingly more globalized and interconnected on the one hand – and this is largely due to economic factors – there is also a simultaneous shifting of plates to fragmentation. Some countries become more Westernized, whilst other remain in the past or intensify their sliding away from the West and other countries.
