What is Latino?

The study of Latino and Hispanic identity sits at the intersection of sociology, political science, cultural studies, and public health, making it a subject that appears across a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses. The topic is academically rich because it involves questions of race, ethnicity, immigration, language, and national origin that resist simple categorization. Students are frequently asked to examine how the terms "Latino" and "Hispanic" function in American society, how they reflect broader power structures, and what they reveal about the United States as a multicultural nation.

The papers archived on this topic take a variety of approaches. Some engage identity debates directly, exploring the distinction between "Hispanic" and "Latino" as contested political and cultural labels. Others adopt a policy focus, analyzing legislation such as Arizona's immigration law and its socio-political consequences for Latino communities. Additional papers examine representation, looking at how Latinos appear in media or are disproportionately placed in special education. Health-oriented essays address issues like childhood obesity and the impact of health maintenance organizations on minority communities, while literary analyses compare works that illuminate Latino experiences through narrative and cultural critique.

A strong essay on this topic requires a clearly bounded thesis that connects a specific aspect of Latino experience — identity, policy, health, or representation — to a broader argument about power, equity, or culture. Evidence drawn from sociological research, policy analysis, or close textual reading carries the most weight depending on the angle chosen. A common pitfall is treating "Latino" or "Hispanic" as a monolithic category; effective essays acknowledge the group's internal diversity rather than flattening distinct national, regional, and cultural backgrounds into a single identity.

Diversity audit of the Coca-Cola Company's workplace and marketing practices
The Coca Cola Company is well-known for its commitment to diversity. The Company has a workforce where almost half the employees are women. However, their representation on the senior management levels is only 26%. The company also recruits racial minorities and members from the LGBT community. The company has institutional mechanisms to ensure that workforce diversity is respected and appreciated throughout the organization. Senior managers demonstrate their commitment to diversity by heading the Business Resource Groups for specific minorities. This supports the theory that senior management should demonstrate commitment to implementing core values (Davidson 2004, p. 286). The Coca Cola Company also pursues diversity in its marketing campaigns to cater to the diverse communities in which it sells its products. The company has also expanded its supplier network to include firms owned and managed by minorities and women. The company also has plans to increase the number of supplier firms run by veterans. It is recommended at the end of the audit that the company should increase the representation of women in the senior management positions and should also develop breadth and depth marketing campaigns to cater to the South Asian and Arab market segments.

Wealth inequality and educational reform in America
A major issue currently effecting culture, population, and demographics is that of wealth inequality. As the global economic downturn continues throughout the world, wealth disparity is increasing rapidly. This affects culture, population, and overall demographics in a litany of ways. First, due primarily to lower wages, families are postponing child birth. The uncertainty surrounding the future creates an atmosphere of fear. Families are now waiting until the economic climate becomes more certain before they have their children. Furthermore, the median income for middle class families has plummeted within the last 3 years. The median income for the average American household was roughly $51,000 in 2008. Now the median income is roughly $48,000. This creates problems as families are less apt to spend money are discretionary activities that form the basis of their culture. Holiday spending, for example has yet to reach its 2007 heights. Families are now more frugal and as a result, certain activities that define a particular culture are being eliminated or postponed. All of this is creating a wealth disparity throughout the world that has never been seen since the great depression. Record levels of debt and unemployment combined with lower wages only contributes to this phenomenon. It is my contention that education is the fundamental cause of this culture and population issue. Proper education can help alleviate and avoid many of the pitfalls that society has subsequently suffered with. Through proper education, the issue of wealth disparity can be solved.
