What is Leaders?

Leadership is a foundational subject in government, political science, public administration, and organizational studies courses. Students are asked to examine what makes individuals effective in positions of authority, how they inspire followers, and how they exercise influence across different contexts. The topic draws on a wide range of frameworks, from contingency approaches to normative models of management and administration, making it analytically rich. Works like Jim Collins's Good to Great and historical figures such as George Washington, Socrates, and General Billy Mitchell frequently serve as case studies, grounding abstract theories in concrete examples of leadership in action.

Papers on this topic take several distinct approaches. Comparative essays weigh different leaders or philosophical traditions against one another, while historical analyses examine figures like General Billy Mitchell or explore leadership dynamics in events such as the Soviet-Afghan War. Some papers focus on organizational change and the skills required to manage it, while others analyze group dynamics through cultural texts like 12 Angry Men. Policy-oriented work addresses leadership in specific sectors, including health care administration. Evaluative essays also engage competing scholarly perspectives, such as the Cha and Kang frameworks, assessing their respective strengths and limitations.

A strong essay on leadership defines its central concept clearly and commits to a specific angle — whether organizational, historical, or theoretical — rather than surveying leadership in general terms. Evidence drawn from documented case studies, named frameworks, or primary historical records carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is conflating leadership with management without acknowledging the meaningful distinctions between influence, authority, and administrative function that serious analysis requires.

Women in Leadership Roles in the U.S. Military: A History
Since the revolutionary periods of the war, women took center stage positions in leadership roles. In periods of the Mexican, Civil and revolutionary wars, remarkably few women got involved in combat. The creation of such reserves was for the allowance of men to concentrate in fighting overseas. The Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASPS) was created by the Air Force so there could be enough personnel to fly within the states men flew overseas. Tactical Encirclement Operations and Negotiation Strategy
Introduction-Tactical Problem The tactical problem lies in carrying out higher headquarters guidance and restoring the central government control of the provincial capital and citadel while simultaneously retaining the loyalty of all supporters of the central government and in neutralizing the threat posed by the militias. Analysis FM 3-90 specifically deals with the problem of deals with offensive operations against an encircled enemy. This would not preclude the use of negotiations to get the enemy commander to surrender peacefully. However, if offensive operations are initiated, this is the defining FM for planning the basic operation. As the FM defines encirclement operations, they are "operations where one force loses its freedom of maneuver because an opposing force is able to isolate it by controlling all ground lines of communication and reinforcement ("FM 3-90 Tactics" D-0)." The operation is not a "separate form of offensive operations but an extension of an ongoing operation. (ibid. D-1)" Therefore, the operation would doctrinally allow U.S. forces to encircle New Olaf while still negotiating. If the enemy engages in offensive (or defensive) operations, friendly forces would then not have far to go in a movement to contact. However, this is only if Ethelred makes the first move. This is why a friendly U.S. commander would only conduct the encirclement and not the second phase of offensive operations (ibid. D-2). Since Ethelred attended U.S. Army service schools such as the Command and General Staff College, he should respect the fact that it is not the U.S. intention to hurt him or his troops unless absolutely necessary.
