What is Literature Review?

A literature review is a structured survey of existing research on a given subject, designed to map what is already known, identify gaps, and establish context for new inquiry. It appears across virtually every academic discipline — from medicine and social science to education and business — because nearly every field requires writers to situate their arguments within an ongoing scholarly conversation. What makes the form academically demanding is that it requires critical synthesis rather than simple summary: writers must evaluate sources, trace patterns across findings, and build a coherent understanding of how a topic has developed over time.

The papers archived here reflect the breadth of subjects that a literature review can address. Some take a clinical or scientific orientation, examining topics such as kidney transplantation, stem cell treatment of leukemia, and maggot debridement therapy for necrotic tissue. Others focus on social and policy concerns, including teen pregnancy risk factors, fatherless homes and child development, affordable housing for low-income families, and special education referral processes for Haitian students. Still others address organizational and research methodology questions, such as pay-for-performance models, scenario planning, and international research methods. Across all these angles, the core task remains the same: synthesizing journal-based evidence to support a focused argument.

A strong literature review establishes a clearly scoped research question and organizes sources thematically or conceptually rather than listing them one by one. Evidence drawn from peer-reviewed journals carries the most weight, and writers should prioritize recent, field-specific studies. The most common pitfall is letting the review become purely descriptive — strong papers consistently evaluate the quality, limitations, and implications of the sources they discuss.

Split fovea theory and bilateral projection theory in reading
The act of reading text may appear to be a static action involving a minimal amount of activity, but every turn of the page requires the human brain to engage a veritable concert of cognitive processing. While seemingly instantaneous, reading just a single word combines the eye’s ability to fixate and project visual information with the brain’s interpretive power, enabling an experienced reader to synthesize wide swaths of textual data in the proverbial blink of an eye. As empirical psychological inquiry has revealed many of the mysteries hidden within the human brain, cognitive researchers have developed a more complete understanding of the perceptual and cerebral processes which are essential to man’s unique ability to decipher meaning from an organization of symbols. Concurrently, the spectrum of anatomical knowledge has been significantly expanded through the advent of microscopic exploration, and today the study of vision enables researchers to examine the structural components of the eye itself. By combining these diverse fields of inquiry, two competing schools of thought have emerged regarding the fovea centralis – an area of the eye located in the center of the macula region of the retina that is crucial for sharp central vision used in reading.

Biomechanical foundations of the human shoulder joint
Since the time of Leonardo di Vinci's pioneering exploration of the human anatomy, man has recognized the perfect union of form and function found in the shoulder joint. Providing a fortuitous combination of mobility and stability, the shoulder joint complex permits a wide range of motion that differentiates human arm movement from that of lower animals. Examined from the unique perspective offered by modern biomechanical research, the shoulder joint is considered to have played a pivotal role in the human evolutionary process, enabling man to better utilize projectile weapons by developing accurate throwing techniques, among other advantageous adaptive qualities. Today, the study of shoulder biomechanics is an essential component of clinical orthopedic care, sports medicine, mechanical injury rehabilitation and a wide array of other fields. By conducting a thorough review of the prevailing research on shoulder biomechanics, the splendidly simple yet efficiently effective structural composition of this foundational joint can be more fully revealed. The following literature review is intended to demonstrate the biomechanical perfection of the human shoulder, synthesizing clinical research published during the last two decades in an attempt to assess the important part played by this joint in facilitating efficient, painless and powerful movements.
