What is Narrative?

A narrative essay is an essay written about a personal experience, usually from the first person perspective.  Because narrative essays are written about personal experiences and from a personal perspective, they can cover a wide range of topic.  They can also be difficult for a student to tackle, because individual experience plays such a critical role in the narrative essay.  We offer several narrative essay examples for people looking to familiarize themselves with the format.  Each of these essays provides a step-by-step tutorial for students who are new to the genre, from the topic to outlines of the work and even a list of resources.

Thompson's "A Defense of Abortion": Key Arguments Analyzed
A Defense of Abortion Introduction The author of this piece, Judith Jarvis Thompson, supports abortion, she uses descriptive assumptions creatively, and she makes dramatic – even outrageous – examples as juxtapositions to develop her argument and make her points. She also employs value assumptions that are effective in her narrative. But Thompson's theses and her Socratic style of argument carry the most weight as she turns of the positions of the "pro-life" movement upside down as a way to make her own positions shine. Thompson presents all of this two years before the U.S. Supreme Court's historic Roe v. Wade decision, which is impressive in hindsight, given the intensity of the ongoing debate on abortion.

Western Media Influence vs. Cultural Authenticity in Arab World
The media and brand names of the Western world beginning to enter the cultural spheres of the Arab world is deemed by some to be a great thing and a vouching for the principles of freedom. Others still, though, denounce this cultural transmission and vehemently state that such invasion of media/brand names is a polluting (if not destruction) of the cultural authenticity of the area.
