What is Obesity?

Obesity is a major public health issue examined across disciplines including health sciences, nutrition, sociology, economics, and public policy. Students encounter this topic in courses ranging from introductory health and wellness to upper-level policy and social science seminars. What makes obesity academically compelling is its complexity: it sits at the intersection of individual biology, social environment, economic systems, and cultural forces. The topic demands that writers move beyond surface-level descriptions of weight and health to consider how factors like physical activity, access to food, diabetes risk, and social structures interact to shape outcomes for individuals and communities.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Some focus on vulnerable populations, examining obesity in children, middle schoolers, and elderly individuals. Others take a causal or analytical angle, exploring how fast food chains, advertising directed at children, and food systems contribute to rising rates of overweight and obese populations. Additional papers tackle structural and economic dimensions, such as the economic impact of obesity in the United States, while others examine personal and familial influences, including the relationship between paternal abandonment and adult obesity. Persuasive and argumentative essays also appear frequently, weighing whether obesity is society's fault or a matter of individual responsibility.

A strong essay on obesity begins with a focused, arguable thesis rather than a broad claim that the issue simply "exists." Evidence drawn from health data, policy analysis, or specific case studies carries the most weight. Writers should connect their chosen angle — whether biological, economic, or social — to concrete consequences for real individuals or groups. A common pitfall is treating obesity as a single-cause problem; the strongest essays acknowledge its multifaceted nature while still maintaining a clear, directed argument.

FDA regulation of over-the-counter weight loss supplements and safety
The FDA is responsible for regulating drugs, but has less power to regulate supplements, including those advertised to promote weight loss. This paper discusses the FDA's role in protecting consumers from the ingestion of OTC weight loss pills that pose a threat to human health. The FDA can issue warnings, but the consumer must always be aware that screening for safety and efficacy of supplements only occurs after the release of the product to market.

Extrinsic and intrinsic asthma: pathophysiology and clinical manifestations
Asthma is an obstructive airway disease that is reversible. It is characterized by hyper-responsiveness of the airways, resulting in chronic inflammation and bronchospasm. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are other examples of obstructive airway diseases that are reversible. (CH, 2011) Asthma can either be extrinsic, also known as atopic asthma, or intrinsic, which is also called non atopic asthma. Extrinsic asthma is the more common variety, comprising of about seventy percent of all cases. This type of asthma is actually an allergic response to a stimulus. The stimulus can vary from person to person. The allergic response can have two phases, namely, an acute response and a late response. The acute response occurs immediately and is mediated through sub-epithelial vagal receptors that cause bronchospasm. This results in a narrow airway through which air must pass to reach the terminal alveoli. The resulting obstruction can worsen with the late response. The late response occurs in the next twenty four hours and is mediated by inflammatory cells which release cytokines. These cytokines cause inflammation and also stimulate the production of mucous. Government regulation of restaurant portion sizes and obesity prevention
The predicaments associated with the modern way of life unfortunately consist of many different natures. But perhaps the most pressing genre is that of deteriorating health conditions. People are generally susceptible to a number of hazardous medical conditions and the prime reason for that is the type of diet that everyone adopts. According to the research conducted by Young and Nestle, "Overweight and obesity have increased sharply since the early 1980s in the United States and worldwide." (Young and Nestle 1) This is a source of major concern since weight problems simultaneously give rise to chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease, thereby reducing general level of life expectancy.
