What is People?

The study of people sits at the center of nearly every academic discipline, from sociology and psychology to literature, public health, and political science. Essays grouped under this broad topic examine human behavior, identity, social roles, and the systems that shape individual lives. Because the subject touches so many fields, students encounter it in introductory composition courses, upper-division humanities seminars, and professional programs alike. Works like Sophocles' Oedipus the King and Langston Hughes' "Night Funeral in Harlem" appear alongside nursing research and immigration policy, reflecting how questions about what it means to be human cross disciplinary boundaries and resist simple answers.

The papers archived here take a wide range of approaches. Literary analysis appears in close readings of Hughes and Sophocles, while social and policy perspectives drive essays on immigration, reintegration after incarceration, and technology dependence. Applied professional angles emerge in work on nursing evidence-based practice, physical education teacher burnout, and strategic staffing. Personal narrative and descriptive writing feature in essays about historical figures and memorable life events, while research-oriented pieces examine extracurricular activity, premarital factors, and quality improvement initiatives. This variety shows that writing about people can mean analyzing a character, evaluating a workplace policy, or reflecting on lived experience.

A strong essay on any aspect of this topic needs a focused, arguable thesis rather than a general statement about humanity. Evidence that carries weight includes specific examples, credible research, or close textual detail depending on the assignment type. The most common pitfall is scope creep — trying to address all of society when the essay should examine one clear issue, case, or idea in meaningful depth.

Dickens's use of complex plots to convey simple moral themes
Charles Dickens wrote tens of thousands of words in his life on a handful of subjects, returning again and again to the questions that first compelled him to write. These subjects – primarily poverty and the ways in which its tentacles spread injustice through all levels of society – are taken up in both Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. The two novels run in parallel lines in terms of theme and symbolism, but diverge as well in terms of their structure and some of the more technical devices. The overall effect of this combination of similarity and dissimilarity leave the reader with the sense of having read the same tale told in two distinct dialects.

Blockbuster's strategic response to digital disruption in video rental
Blockbuster has succeeded by being very agile and quick to respond from a marketing and services standpoint to very significant opportunities and threats in their core markets. Having changed their value chain three times in the case study and a myriad of modifications in each cycle of business model re-engineering, Blockbuster emerges as a multi-channel based entertainment provider. The three strategic cycles of their value chain parallel the industry lifecycles of the video rental marketplace, pay-per-view premium and finally online services comparable to direct delivery programs like Hulu and distribution-centric business models like Netflix. Blockbuster's aggressive retail expansion, retrenchment, introduction of games, online services and direct competition to Netflix all show how quickly the company can re-intent itself. Yet for all of these strengths, Blockbuster is still being disrupted by entertainment, gaming and entertainment services business models instead of being the disruptor. They have yet to break out of being continually in a revision mode related to their retailing operations. Their retail-based business model is slowing dying due to the high costs of operating locations, the rise of Netflix as a viable alternative for watching videos at home, and the disintermediation from Redbox, WalMart and other mass merchandisers offering lower-priced and broader selections of videos to watch. Blockbuster still faces a very serious strategic challenge, and that is overcoming the commoditization of the industry they are in, where price and availability have become the new differentiators.

Motivation for teaching in a Catholic school environment
ONE: Why do I want to become a teacher in a Catholic School Board? Anyone that takes the effort and has the moral, spiritual and social motivation to become a teacher in a Christian / Roman Catholic environment is to be praised. There is so much for all of us to learn, and in particular so many young people are there in front of us, asking in their own adolescent way to receive knowledge of the spiritual life. We must be there for them. We must inspire them. In a world where the young people are being distracted by text messages – and some are clearly addicted to this digital technology – and by smart phone capabilities, and by the Internet's lure, by violent video games, and movies, cars, Facebook, drugs, alcohol, provocative magazines and more, the need to share Christian values with them has never been more urgent.
