What is Performing?

Performing as an academic topic spans a wide range of disciplines, from the arts and business to education, healthcare, and workplace studies. In arts courses, it often addresses live performance, accessibility in theatrical and cultural spaces, and the rituals surrounding events such as weddings. In business and management programs, performing refers to executing professional duties, analyzing prices, and building high-functioning teams. This breadth makes the topic academically interesting precisely because the act of performing—whether on a stage or within an organization—raises shared questions about preparation, standards, ethics, and audience.

Student papers on this topic take notably varied approaches. Some focus on practical professional tasks, such as carrying out purchasing agent duties or conducting price analysis in business contexts. Others take a policy or advocacy angle, examining accessibility in the performing arts or how organizations can better support adult learners through needs assessments. Narrative and rhetorical approaches also appear, with writers reflecting personally on performance experiences or analyzing how visual and ceremonial contexts—like religious versus non-religious weddings—shape meaning. A smaller group of papers addresses workplace behavior, including why employees resist adopting new technology during daily tasks.

A strong essay on performing benefits from a tightly scoped thesis that commits to one domain—artistic, organizational, or educational—rather than treating all senses of the word at once. Evidence carries the most weight when it is specific: workplace data, policy examples, or close analysis of a particular event or text. The most common pitfall is letting the topic remain too abstract; grounding arguments in concrete cases or clearly defined professional contexts keeps analysis focused and persuasive.

Accessibility and Declining Patronage in the Performing Arts
This study attempts to address the recent decline in arts patronage with an eye towards its underlying factors. While recent research has focused on the mix of economic pressures which have resulted in decreased funding for the arts, this research has frequently failed to investigate the attitudes and perceptions which inform these economic decisions. In order to bridge this critical lacuna, this study examines the different barriers to participation in the arts and determines that the recent decline is the result of practical and perceptual barriers to participation that engage in a vicious cycle wherein misinformed attitudes towards art precipitate decreased public and private support, which then serves perpetuate these attitudes. Stepping outside this cycle in order to reverse the decline requires an honest assessment of art's benefits and which benefits should be included when making appeals for greater patronage and support.
