What is Place?

Place is a foundational concept in geography that examines how physical locations, environments, and spatial contexts shape human experience, identity, and social organization. Students across geography, urban studies, environmental science, and humanities courses engage with place as a way to understand how people interact with and assign meaning to the world around them. What makes the concept academically rich is its dual nature: place can be analyzed as a concrete, mappable location or as a subjective, lived experience, and strong scholarship often bridges both dimensions to reveal how context drives behavior, policy, and culture.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a broad range of approaches. Some take a case-study format, grounding analysis in specific events or organizations such as the Cuyahoga River valley to examine environmental and community dynamics. Others use comparative methods, setting distinct situations side by side — as seen in work contrasting the psychological impact of Katrina and the Lusitania — to draw out how different places and circumstances produce different outcomes. Policy-oriented approaches also appear, with writers assessing how decisions at institutional or governmental levels affect communities in particular locations.

A strong essay on place benefits from a clearly scoped thesis that commits to either a specific geographic site or a defined theoretical angle — attempting both without adequate focus is a common pitfall. Evidence drawn from case studies, historical context, and documented community outcomes tends to carry the most weight. Writers should avoid treating place as mere backdrop; the most persuasive essays position location itself as an active factor that shapes the issues, reasons, and life experiences under analysis.

Breaking bad habits: identification, consequences, and intervention strategies
It is also good to try to replace bad habits with healthier behaviors. For example, if your bad habit is always being late, the new pattern could include something that is healthy for you or at least more fun. Instead of being ten minutes late for everything you do, you could try to show up half an hour early to everything for thirty days and bring along a favorite book or magazine to read while you wait. Or maybe play a game on your phone that you like. Whatever it is, if it is enjoyable, it will help reinforce the attempt to break the bad habit and put something better in its place. However, you also need to be careful not to replace a bad habit with another bad habit or else you could simply go back to square one. Finally, if you try to break a habit and it doesn’t work on the first try, then don’t give up. Keep trying different approaches. Eventually you will find one that works for you and you will be able to kick your bad habit for good.

Right whale skeletons and evolutionary adaptation in museum exhibits
After visiting the Harvard Museum of Natural History in Cambridge, I was left in awe by the amazing displays featuring fully intact whale skeletons. Entering the museum’s newly renovated Great Mammal Hall, I was immediately struck by the sheer size of the three whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling. The three species of whale found here include the Sperm whale, the Fin whale, and the Right whale; and each skeletal display offered a unique glimpse into the biological construction of nature’s largest mammalian creatures. Personally, I found myself becoming increasingly fascinated with the amazing Right whale skeleton, because this was my first up-close encounter with this animal’s distinctive baleen filter-feeding system. Baleen whales are one of two suborders of the Cetacean order (which consists of whales, dolphins and porpoises), with the other suborder consisting of the toothed whales or Odontoceti order. By examining the baleen mouth of the Right whale in such close proximity, I was able to see how the baleen hangs solely from the upper jaw, rather than connecting between the upper and lower jaws.
