What is Plants?

Plants sit at the intersection of biology, ecology, and environmental science, making them a subject of study across disciplines from introductory life sciences to advanced environmental policy courses. Their role in sustaining ecosystems, producing oxygen, and supporting food systems gives them broad academic relevance. Student essays on this topic frequently engage with foundational biological processes — such as photosynthesis and cellular repair — alongside larger ecological and policy questions about how human activity shapes plant life and the environments that depend on it. Works like The Botany of Desire also bring a cultural and historical lens to human relationships with plants, widening the scope beyond pure science.

The papers archived here reflect a genuine range of approaches. Some focus on biological mechanisms, examining how light quantity affects the rate of photosynthesis or how wound healing occurs in plant cells. Others take an environmental or policy angle, addressing invasive plant species in New York State or the US Endangered Species Act. Applied and agricultural threads run through papers on medicinal uses of plants and converting sugar into fuel, while geographical and ecological concerns appear in discussions of water and species distribution. This variety shows how plant-related topics can support comparative, case-study, and process-analysis frameworks equally well.

A strong essay on plants benefits from a clearly bounded thesis — focusing on one process, species category, or policy question rather than treating plants in general. Evidence drawn from observable biological data, documented ecological case studies, or specific legislative frameworks tends to carry the most weight. A common pitfall is conflating description with analysis; simply explaining what plants do is not enough without connecting those processes to broader environmental or scientific consequences.

Obesity: history, prevention, and global health impact
Although it is presently a worldwide problem, obesity is not actually a new phenomenon. Experts in Europe and the Middle East found obese figures dating from 23,000 to 25,000 years ago. These figures were likely to be deities from the Paleolithic era. In Neolithic these corpulent figures invoked fertility for people and plants and they were often named Mother Goddesses. In the Modern era figures of obese women continued to appear not only as figurines, but also in paintings.

Wetlands as critical ecosystems and conservation strategies
Introduction Wetlands are the main link between the land and the water, and as such are vitally important to the ecology. Wetlands have been misunderstood and abused throughout the history of the United States – and elsewhere in the world – and that has led to enormous environmental losses. This paper explores all pertinent information with regard to wetlands. What are Wetlands? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines wetlands as those "…transition zones where the flow of water, the cycling of nutrients," along with the sun's energy, all meet in order to create "…a unique ecosystem characterized by hydrology, soils, and vegetation" (EPA). The four categories of wetlands are swamps, bogs, fens and marshes. The EPA describes marshes as wetlands that are "…dominated by soft-stemmed vegetation"; swamps are quite different, as they are composed of "mostly woody plants." As for bogs, they are freshwater wetlands that were formed by glacier-made lakes; bogs are dominated by "spongy peat deposits, evergreen trees and shrubs" with a floor featuring a "thick carpet of sphagnum moss" (EPA). The EPA defines fens as "freshwater peat-forming wetlands" that are noted for grasses, reeds, wildflowers and sedges.

How the Cinderella story varies across cultures and versions
Many cultures around the world have their own version of the Cinderella story. It is a classic tale about good versus evil. Many contemporary American audiences are familiar with the Disney version, but there is a heroine for almost every race and culture. The magic is provided, variously, by a fairy godmother, Mother Nature, or some other being or force. It is a tale of transformation, too, as a simple girl is rewarded with a better life than the one she had.

Environmental and health impacts of wind power as renewable energy
The greatest challenge of the 21st century is filling the gap between energy demand and supply with clean, reliable and green source of energy. Energy is very essential and it is in material form in everything that is around us. The opportunity cost of obtaining the energy that we require is the impact that is made on our environment. Some energy sources have greater impacts while others have relatively lesser ones. All sources of energy affect the environment in one way or the other. There is absolutely no such thing as an entirely clean source of energy. (Boyle & University, 2004)
