A process analysis essay may also be called a how-to essay.  However, a process analysis essay does not necessarily tell you how to do something; it may also explain how something works.  Whichever approach you are asked to take, a process analysis essay draws on the skills you have learned from expository writing, but is also significantly different from a normal expository essay.  Instead, it is similar to technical writing.  This similarity is true, whether you are writing a traditional how-to essay or a more complex essay explaining how something works.

In the introduction of your process analysis essay, you need to introduce the reader to the goal of the essay.  If your essay is of the “how to” variety, then you need to let the reader know what you are going to be telling them how to do.  In addition, it is helpful to give them an idea of how involved the process is, how long the process might take, and any ingredients or special equipment they will need for the process.  If your essay is of the descriptive variety, then your introduction should inform the reader about the process that will be described, including reasons for the process.

How to approach the body of a process analysis essay will depend on what type of essay you are writing.  However, whether you are writing a how-to essay or a descriptive essay, it is important to write the essay in chronological order.   Simply break the process down into easily identifiable steps, then describe those steps.  For a how-to essay, it important to remember that you not only want to identify the steps, but also ensure that the reader can ascertain how to accomplish each individual step from the information in the essay.  This can involve knowing your audience, and not making unwarranted assumptions about their level of familiarity with the topic.

As with other types of academic writing, the conclusion of your essay will mirror your introduction.  You will remind the reader of the process you have been analyzing, describe why the process is useful, and add in helpful tips or suggestions for future changes.

British Petroleum Workshop Agenda Atom Process Analysis
The BP Texas City oil case is a classic case of risk management. In this case, we have a productive oil refinery that had paid off its initial investment long before. As we can see in the BP case, the Active Threats and Opportunities Management (ATOM) process is rarely implemented correctly (Hillson & Simon, 2007, 23). This is precisely what we will be doing in this workshop. Assess and prioritize risks to the project through an analysis of the active threats and opportunities presented. Background The Texas City Oil Refinery fire did not happen in a vacuum. There was a history of safety issues at the plant, even before the 2005 fire. This ATOM analysis will concentrate on those reports because the reports after the disaster are predisposed to blaming John Browne and the upper management at BP, though this may be justified since the refinery was a BP asset from 1999 on (Trevor, 2007, 4) Therefore, the Telos Report of 2004 should yield some good objective information for the ATOM process.

Procter & Gamble CSR Strategy: Assessment and Recommendations
Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) reported $83B in Sales and earned Net Income of $10.7B in their latest full fiscal year which ended June 30, 2012 (Procter & Gamble). P&G continues to experience profitability declines, and in their most recent financial reporting provided guidance of organic sales growth of between 2% to 4% wile also reporting the successful sales of their Snack business in May, 2012. P&G also announced in February, 2012 that the company was initiating an aggressively cost reduction plan of trimming $10B over the next five years, with $8B in immediate cost reduction programs at trimming 5,700 non-manufacturing and corporate jobs (Procter & Gamble). P&G is looking to this significant effort to add 10% greater gross margin corporate-wide in the next two years. P&G, while having one of the most extensive global manufacturing and distribution networks, has seen deterioration of its more profitable, long-standing product lines. One of P&G's greatest strengths is its ability to continually create and launch innovative products. As several of the top-selling brands are struggling to retain market share globally, P&G has said they are investing heavily into bolstering their innovation processes and centers globally (Procter & Gamble). Regionally strong competitors throughout Brazil, India and China are also eroding P&G's market share (Procter & Gamble).

Client of an Mro, or the In-House
Introduction A choice facing the researcher at the outset of a research project is between using qualitative and quantitative research methods, or a combination of both. The client of an MRO, or the in-house marketing research manager, generally has a budget available to finance a variety of studies and he or she will usually have to determine whether it is worth conducting a particular survey or study. This is frequently a subjective decision based on their previous experience of commissioning and conducting research (Swain and Jones, 2002). The choice made usually depends on the circumstances of the research project, its objectives and how much is already known about the management problem from either past research or experience. If there is little pre- understanding of the management problem faced, the researcher may wish to explore the problem further before attempting to research a possible solution.
