What is Research?

Research as a discipline sits at the foundation of nearly every academic field, from the natural sciences and medicine to social science, business, and education. Students across courses in sociology, organizational behavior, biology, marketing, and public policy are asked to engage with research not just as consumers of evidence but as practitioners who must design, evaluate, and defend systematic inquiry. What makes the topic academically compelling is its dual nature: research is both a subject of study and a method, requiring students to understand how data is gathered, how quality is assessed, and how evidence supports or challenges existing knowledge.

The archived papers on this topic span a wide range of approaches. Some take a methodological focus, examining qualitative research methods or the design of research proposals, as seen in work addressing the three strikes law. Others apply research frameworks to specific issues such as employee turnover, work-life balance, embryonic stem cell ethics, and the effects of video games on children. Still others move into organizational and market contexts, analyzing vision and mission statements or segmentation strategies, while some engage with social science literature and family structure comparisons. This variety reflects how research methodology adapts across disciplines rather than belonging to any single one.

A strong essay on research grounds its thesis in a clearly defined question and matches its chosen method to that question. Evidence drawn from peer-reviewed journals carries the most weight, and writers should demonstrate why their approach — qualitative, quantitative, or mixed — suits their subject. The most common pitfall is conflating topic breadth with analytical depth; a focused, well-supported argument about a specific aspect of research design or findings will always outperform a broad survey that substitutes coverage for rigor.

Green to Gold: A Review
Daniel C. Etsy and Andrew S. Winston compose a number of innovative strategies within their work Green to Gold. The most powerful part of this book is the attention it calls to the fact that our resources are fixed, and that we are quickly moving towards a demand that will deplete those resources too fast. Thus creates a situation where environmental issues are not just a societal or governmental concern, but a business one as well considering that less resources typically means a limited profit potential in the long run.

Consumption of Alternative, as Opposed
What these results suggest is that higher preference for alternative health care coincides with healthier eating habits (self-assessed, question 15 and 18), which comes as no major surprise, but also for more, but more restless sleeping, which coincides with higher self-reported stress (Q22) and less ability to concentrate when sleep is interrupted (Q21), especially for women. These results suggest further investigation comparing sleeping and eating habits in this population, perhaps. Question 17 suggests for another example that restaurant marketers may want to investigate advertising more to traditional, rather than alternative health consumers.

Jabri, Adrain, and Boje (2008)
The article of Jabri, Adrain, and Boje (2008) on alternative to the monological model is fascinating in that it causes us not only to think about communication in an alternate way but also reverses paradigms in other factors too. Jabri, Adrain, and Boje (2008) submit that Western culture emphasizes the monological model due to its tendency of viewing the recipient of communication as an I-It (I.e. object) rather than as an I-Thou and therefore addressing the other in a peremptory or objective, detached manner. Perceiving the other, however, as complex person would stimulate a multi-dialogic strand of communication and this would replace the monological model. As prescription, accordingly, Jabri, Adrain, and Boje (2008) see Bakhtin's approach as more suited to a constructive mode of communicating. It seems to me, too, that expanding on Jabri, Adrain, and Boje's (2008) thoughts, the monological model may be more suited to a specific historical and geographical context and time. Certain periods such as the modern ages may be more demonstrative of the monological model than may be an earlier period. Similarly, too, certain countries, such s America, may be representative of the monological model than other countries/ continents such as India may be.
