What is Research?

Research as a discipline sits at the foundation of nearly every academic field, from the natural sciences and medicine to social science, business, and education. Students across courses in sociology, organizational behavior, biology, marketing, and public policy are asked to engage with research not just as consumers of evidence but as practitioners who must design, evaluate, and defend systematic inquiry. What makes the topic academically compelling is its dual nature: research is both a subject of study and a method, requiring students to understand how data is gathered, how quality is assessed, and how evidence supports or challenges existing knowledge.

The archived papers on this topic span a wide range of approaches. Some take a methodological focus, examining qualitative research methods or the design of research proposals, as seen in work addressing the three strikes law. Others apply research frameworks to specific issues such as employee turnover, work-life balance, embryonic stem cell ethics, and the effects of video games on children. Still others move into organizational and market contexts, analyzing vision and mission statements or segmentation strategies, while some engage with social science literature and family structure comparisons. This variety reflects how research methodology adapts across disciplines rather than belonging to any single one.

A strong essay on research grounds its thesis in a clearly defined question and matches its chosen method to that question. Evidence drawn from peer-reviewed journals carries the most weight, and writers should demonstrate why their approach — qualitative, quantitative, or mixed — suits their subject. The most common pitfall is conflating topic breadth with analytical depth; a focused, well-supported argument about a specific aspect of research design or findings will always outperform a broad survey that substitutes coverage for rigor.

Race and Recreation Memo From: Kristopher G.
After the regrettable incident which recently occurred in Grand Forks, involving three Red River High students who chose to wear Ku Klux Klan (KKK) uniforms to the school hockey team's State tournament Semifinal game, it is my responsibility to personally address this unfortunate situation. While it goes without saying that the actions of these three students is a disappointment to all of us, as the history of racial discrimination epitomized by the KKK is in no way representative of our school's values, simply condemning this insensitive act is not an adequate response. The three freshmen students responsible for making such an irresponsible decision have been identified, and they will be disciplined accordingly, but as the Principal of Red River High School it is my goal to determine exactly why any of our student's believed it would be acceptable to support our athletic achievements by donning the uniform of a racist and bigoted terroristic group. Although the playoff "Whiteout" is a valued local tradition in our community, where most students, and their parents as well, have played hockey at some level during their lives, I regret to inform you that, unless the student body of Red River High can demonstrate a renewed commitment to respecting all races, religions, creeds and colors, myself and district administrators may be forced to prohibit the "Whiteout" from occurring at any of our school's sporting events.

Poverty and Children in the U.S. Poverty
It is unfortunate to state that sociological ills have preserved their place in almost every society, civilization and empire. Be it slavery, illiteracy, disease or poverty; one vice or the other has invaded communities throughout history and wreaked destruction upon the inhabitants. Despite the revolutions in the information technology and communication sector, countries are still experiencing a strong dearth of resources. Regardless of the progress within the global corporate realm, there is a widening gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots". Poverty is a harsh and tangible part of our world reality. What is poverty? A simple and straightforward explanation is to be without basic, essential items such as food, water, and shelter. The Copenhagen Declaration paints it as "a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation, facilities, health, education and information". (Finding Solutions to Poverty, 2006)
