What is Russia?

Russia is one of the most studied countries across academic disciplines, appearing in history, political science, literature, cultural studies, and international relations courses. Its vast geographic reach, turbulent political transformations, and outsized influence on global affairs make it a compelling subject for scholarly analysis. Student essays engage with figures such as Catherine the Great, Ivan the Terrible, and Stalin, as well as literary works like Alexander Pushkin's The Shot and John Scott's Behind the Urals, reflecting the country's rich intersection of political history and cultural production. The legacy of the Soviet Union and the ideological tensions between Russian nationalism and global forces give the topic enduring academic relevance.

Papers on this topic take a wide range of approaches. Historical and biographical analyses examine individual rulers and their exercise of power. Literary essays explore how socialism and visions of an ideal future appear in Russian writing. Economic and policy-focused work addresses issues like property rights security in deprivatization contexts. Cultural studies papers cover subjects as varied as Russian cuisine, the expressionist painter Vasily Kandinsky, and Slavophilic ideas set against modern globalization. International relations angles emerge in work on the Baltic States, the European Union, and global immigration patterns involving Russia.

A strong essay on Russia begins with a focused thesis rather than a broad survey of the country's history. Evidence drawn from primary sources, specific policy outcomes, or close textual analysis carries more weight than general background. The most common pitfall is treating Russia as a monolithic subject — successful essays narrow their scope to a defined period, figure, text, or policy question and develop an original argument within that frame.

Bach and Frederick the Great: paths to greatness through music and power
This paper is a book report about "Evening in the Palace of Reason: Bach Meets Frederick the Great in the Age of Enlightenment (Harper Perennial, James Gaines), 2006".Gaines' book discusses two of history's greatest men, each of whom became great for a different reason. One was a political leader and statesman the other a musician. The biography of each could not have been more different. Both had tough lives and both fought against enormous stakes but one lived in a palace and the other travelled from place to place living in some at most only 3 years. One sampled jail and the other saw his partner killed and was saved by being sent to the military. One was homosexual and the other happily married in love. Bach's love in contradistinction to that of Frederick was more serene and meaningful. His music absorbed him and made him happy. He was focused; his life purely devoted to cantatas and organ music. His character, possibly formed by his music, was placid and thoughtful. Frederick the Great, on the other hand, was tempestuous and troublesome. His difficult childhood forced him to be great despite trauma that would have unsettled almost anyone else. Bach too persevered, persisting at a craft that was onerous and lonely and took him a while to develop. Their differences, in short, were extreme. Their commonalities? Perhaps, that both attained greatness through different means.

SpaceX's Dragon cargo capsule and successful project management
A Very Good Aviation Project - SpaceX Introduction The current aerospace technologies being built and flown by the private commercial company known as SpaceX (from California) have a remarkable record of success thus far. The "Dragon," which is the cargo capsule built by SpaceX, put into orbit by the Falcon 9 launch rocket, delivered its second load of supplies to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday, March 3 (Segal, 2013). The SpaceX contract with NASA is for a total of twelve cargo missions to the ISS over the coming years; the first Dragon cargo ship was launched and delivered supplies to the International Space Station in October, 2012. The un-manned Dragon is designed to carry supplies to and from the ISS, and it is the first privately built commercial spacecraft to handle those chores – or conduct any space-related activities per se. NASA contracted with SpaceX in 2008 after NASA had retired its fleet of space shuttles and yet the agency still needed to be able to resupply the ISS.
