What is Sex?

Sex as an academic topic extends well beyond biology to encompass social, cultural, political, and psychological dimensions that make it a subject of serious scholarly inquiry. Students encounter this topic in sociology, gender studies, public health, media studies, and political science courses, among others. What makes it academically compelling is the way it intersects with power, identity, and social structure — touching on how societies organize themselves, distribute resources, and construct meaning around bodies and relationships. The distinction between sex and gender, for example, raises fundamental questions about nature versus social construction that run across multiple disciplines.

The papers collected here take a wide range of approaches. Some analyze media and advertising to examine how sexual imagery shapes public attitudes toward women, children, and society broadly. Others focus on public health concerns such as sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, treating the subject through an epidemiological and preventive lens. Additional work explores attraction, love, and intimacy from psychological and sociological angles, while several papers situate sex within larger frameworks of race, class, gender, and social inequality. Policy-oriented and comparative approaches also appear, including examinations of how gender functions as a relative term in political contexts.

A strong essay on this topic begins with a clearly scoped thesis that commits to one angle — media representation, public health, gender theory, or social inequality — rather than treating sex as a vague umbrella. Evidence drawn from peer-reviewed research, documented case studies, or identifiable policy debates carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is conflating sex and gender without acknowledging the distinction, which undermines analytical precision and weakens the argument's credibility.

Slaughterhouse-Five: Novel vs. Film Comparison
This paper compares and contracts the movie and the book Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. The main themes and plot development are discussed as well as how they are presented to the respective audience. While many see this novel as anti-war, the paper concludes the central theme of both works is that life is meaningless and pointless, the universe does not care one iota about the human race, and humanity's myopia and self-delusion blinds them to this reality while leading them to their own destruction. The movie softens this theme. Another feature of this paper is a personal interview with a World War II veteran.

Managing Workplace Diversity: Challenges and Strategies
Managing Diversity Diversity is a fact of American and International business and is a broader, more complex issue than one might initially believe. This paper will address the breadth and complexity of Diversity by reviewing: the nature of Diversity; legally protected classes within the United States; aspects of Diversity that fall outside the scope of U. S. legal protections; the benefits of Diversity for employers; the differences/challenges presented by Diversity for employers; general business adjustments/accommodations for Diversity; and suggested specific business adjustments/accommodations for Diversity. Though this paper cannot exhaustively address all aspects of Diversity, it is hoped that a review of all those aspects will give a good overview of modern businesses' Diversity issues and possible solutions. The nature of Diversity is shown to be much broader than the classes legally protected by U.S. Law; it also includes global issues created by international business and classes, such as our four generations of American workers, extending far beyond the narrow confines of U.S. law. As we have seen from our sources, there are many benefits for companies embracing Diversity, not only in "doing the right thing" but also in basic business advantages of greater employee skills, attraction for consumers and greater profitability. Despite these advantages, Diversity exposes businesses to differences/challenges, such as the attitude of some businesspeople; societal prejudice; different attitudes of different cultures; the apparent tendency of business to inadequately honor international cultural differences; prejudice against Middle-Eastern workers in view of 09/11; challenges when women & minorities are not proportionately represented in upper management; and challenges presented by the different traits and expectations of our four generations of American workers. In order to meet those differences/challenges, most sources seem to agree on general business adjustments/accommodations for Diversity, such as: recognition of Diversity; recognizing the need for Diversity Training; establishing a "corporate culture" embracing Diversity and inclusion through communication, clear policy and insistence on Diversity; Diversity coaching; a clear plan for company-wide Diversity, with the company acting as a "moderator" of those values; training involving a "top-to-bottom" approach in which Diversity values start with the CEO and move down and throughout the company. Finally, some sources have offered propositions, simple plans and very complex plans for Diversity programs, all of which seem to agree with the general principles that the positive embrace of Diversity must come from the highest reaches of a company, move down through company channels and spread throughout the company for the greatest success.

Count Dracula and Hannibal Lecter: Identity and Horror Compared
Many of the critics have observed comparisons that are among Hannibal Lecter and Dracula, a linking which Harris compounded in Hannibal Rising by creating Lecter, like Dracula, an Eastern European Count. Each characters share customs of malicious biting and a threateningly seductive attraction. A lot of Lecter's physical structures, for instance his burgundy tinted looking eyes which had sparked red when uncovered to light, his widow's top, and important wits (particularly smell), are also features of Dracula. This paper will discuss this contrast and differences of two men that shared the one quality that made then alike, living the life of killers and the things that motivated them to feed this terror.
