What is Theology?

Theology is the systematic study of the nature of the divine, religious belief, and the relationship between faith and human experience. It appears across a wide range of academic disciplines, including religious studies, philosophy, history, and education. Students engage with theology in courses on church history, Christian thought, pastoral ministry, and ethics. What makes theology academically rich is its demand that students move between abstract doctrinal questions and lived human concerns — examining how belief systems are formed, contested, and applied within communities of faith.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a broad range of approaches. Some take a doctrinal or historical angle, examining figures and frameworks such as the theology of John Calvin, postliberal theology's relationship to Vatican II, or the tension between predestination and free will. Others engage in applied and pastoral directions, exploring how theology shapes ministry, Christian education, and community life. Several papers take an integrative approach, such as examining how psychology and theology intersect, or how theology connects to civil religion. Critical and comparative analysis also appears, including book critiques and responses to institutional church positions.

A strong theology essay begins with a focused thesis that takes a clear position on a doctrinal, ethical, or interpretive question rather than simply summarizing beliefs. Evidence drawn from scripture, church tradition, and the work of recognized theologians typically carries the most weight. Historical context strengthens arguments considerably — showing how a belief developed over time adds depth to any claim. The most common pitfall to avoid is treating theology as purely personal reflection; academic theology requires engagement with established frameworks and careful reasoning, not just statements of individual faith.

Neural Networks, Neuroplasticity, and the Science-Religion Divide
Conflicts between religion and science are neither new nor novel. In the 1600s, Galileo was hauled before a court and convicted of heresy for saying (and publishing) that the earth revolved around the sun instead of the opposite. This paper examines the issue of the brain, neural networks, and the brain-mind connection through G. Schroeder's book, The Hidden Face of God, finding that there are less areas of conflict between religion and science than previously thought.

Ibsen's A Doll's House: Feminism and Modern Tragedy
Now recognized as the "Father of Realism" and one of the founders of the European Modernist movement, Norwegian playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen began life as the child of a well-to-do merchant family in the portside town of Skein. Although Ibsen's first few years of life would be considered rather idyllic, his father's unexpected fall from financial grace into a state of bankruptcy precipitated a tumultuous adolescence defined by Ibsen's father routinely mistreating his family. In the words of one Ibsen biographer, "always an authoritarian, Knud Ibsen became a family tyrant, visiting his bitterness and resentment on his wife and children" (Templeton 4), with this introduction to the powerless state inflicted upon women – and the abuses they suffer in silence – serving as a catalyst for the writer's subsequent literary portrayals of victimized female figures transforming into tragic heroines. The conflicted Ibsen soon began exploring creative outlets for the internalized frustration he felt towards his father, writing deeply reflective prose, along with tragic plays featuring characters who echoed his parent's own tortured marital dynamic. Although many of his initial forays into the world of dramatic literature proved to be fruitless, Ibsen persevered throughout his adolescence and adulthood, penning several works combing tragic elements with the realism of European Modernism. It was not until Ibsen reached his late thirties that his work as a playwright began to pay financial dividends, and only during his self-imposed exile to the European nations of Italy and Germany did he begin to infuse his work with the scathing social commentary that propelled A Doll's House into realm of literary discussion.
