What is Writing?

Writing as an academic subject spans nearly every discipline, making it one of the most broadly studied topics in higher education. Students encounter it in composition courses, education programs, linguistics, communication studies, and professional training contexts. What makes it academically interesting is its dual nature: writing is both an object of study and the primary medium through which knowledge is produced and communicated. This tension between writing as a skill and writing as a subject of critical inquiry gives the topic unusual range, touching on areas as varied as civil rights documentation, Islamic arts such as Arabic calligraphy, language acquisition in ESL classrooms, and phenomena like glossolalia.

The papers archived here reflect a wide spread of approaches. Some take a self-reflective angle, such as skill self-assessments and reflection papers that ask writers to evaluate their own abilities and understanding. Others are evaluative or critical, including critiques of lesson plans and literary analysis of authored works. Applied and professional writing appears too, covering areas like labor relations, municipal budgets, and army regulations. Methodological writing, such as work on in-depth interviewing, treats written communication as integral to research design itself.

A strong essay on writing benefits from a clearly scoped thesis that commits to one dimension of the subject — craft, culture, function, or pedagogy — rather than treating all at once. Evidence drawn from specific texts, classroom contexts, or documented practices carries more weight than general claims about the importance of writing. The most common pitfall is circularity: writing about writing well requires demonstrating the very competencies being discussed, so clarity, precise word choice, and organized argument are not just stylistic preferences but core to the essay's credibility.

Abuse and institutional failure in Dwight Abbott's memoir
Long ago in the dying years of the 17th century, the authors of a satire on human society, called The Roaring Girl, criticized the jail system noting that it was a place that bred criminals rather than reformed them. Abbot‘s book, I Cried, You Didn't Listen: A Survivor's Expose of the California Youth Authority, is evidence of the truth of this statement. Taken from his family when young, one wonders who is more to blame, - Abbot's family (particularly his parents) who didn't provide him with the needed care or the national system that so cruelly exploited him and turned a naïve, innocent child into a hardened, unrepentant criminal.

Formally, sexual harassent is defined as the intimidation, bullying, or coercion in which sexual terms, expectations, or promise/rewards for sexual favors are either given or insinuated. In most countries, it is a form of illegal employment discrimination and most recently, many businesses have used training and every means possible to reduce the issue within the workplace. However, despite this multiple decade trend, many scholars believe that there are still some organizations, academia for instance, in which harassment remains hidden due to a myopic view from the administration and management

Five stages of spelling development in children
Unique spellings are created by the children as they are developing their skills of spelling development referred to as invented spellings. Based on the knowledge of phonology that the children have, spelling creation is a unique phenomenon in the children. In most of the cases, it is seen that the children use letters for spelling words and consonants rather consistent usage of sounds. Some of the main examples include night (NIT), girl (GRL) and TIGR (tiger). There are five main stages of spelling development in children. 1st stage, emergent spelling, is known for the scribbling of letters, letter like forms, and scribbles and children do no associate marks with phonemes (Tompkins, Campbell, and Green, 2011), p. 168).

Truth and perception in Josephine Tey's The Daughter of Time
The Daughter of Time "Everybody knows that Richard III, the last of the Plantagenet kings, murdered his two nephews. But everybody could be wrong – according to Scotland Yard's Inspector Grant, who studies 500-year-old evidence to try to determine who really killed these two heirs to the British throne…" (Harris, 2001, p. 1). Introduction On the initial page of author Josephine Tey's book, The Daughter of Time, the author (whose real name is Elizabeth MacKintosh and who also uses the name Gordon Daviot) embraces the quote, "Truth is the Daughter of Time." That is an appropriate use of the proverb because much of the discussion of Tey's fictitious historical novel centers on the concepts of truth and perception when it comes to King Richard III. Summary of the Book One of Tey's characters that she uses in this novel, and in several of her other books, Alan Grant, is an inspector with Scotland Yard in London. Because Grant is normally very active and on the go, when he is confined to a hospital bed – as he is at the outset of the novel – instead of his normal gumshoe detective work he puts his investigative mind and imagination to work. His investigative side has been activated because a friend has brought Grant a reproduction of a portrait of King Richard III. It can be said with assurance that the arguments that Tey presents in this novel are organized in a very clear manner, and indeed the book presents it's narrative in a readable form, following the work of Grant and his associates with clarity and logic.
