His solution is really an anti-solution. He urges people to have only one boy, but his implied message is clear - big brothers make stronger, better, younger brothers. Close to the end of the essay the author writes, "If you think my case is an isolated one, you are gravely mistaken. There are probably millions of young men around the world who would not be the same men they are today had it not been for their older brothers" (Krull). I had to laugh, because his descriptions of how older brothers treat their siblings is so right on. They are bigger, and they will not let younger brothers forget it. I have gone through many similar circumstances with my older brother, and sometimes it makes me angry, because just like in this essay, my parents seem clueless about his actions. However, the essay made me laugh, because the author is very good at description and humor, and writes so others can identify with his plight.

I do not think this essay would have been nearly as effective if the author had taken a different tone and written a sentimental...

It is clear that treatment like this can leave wounds, and he may not ever totally forgive them. However, he can see the good in a situation, and what comes from all this abuse. He clearly has a good relationship with his brothers and his family. Using sarcasm and humor helps make the abuse a little bit less threatening, and yet makes his feelings clear. He loves his brothers, and recognizes the bond they share. However, making this essay funny and sarcastic shows that he understands his audience. Most men do not want to read a sappy article about "why I love my brothers," but they can identify with a witty piece that makes them think of their own past and what it has meant to them. This essay does that, and that is what gives it its' impact and meaning.
