¶ … earth extinction similar to Mars may become a fact because of various problems in the earth. What can be done to stop the extinction of the earth? Will Earth suffer the same fate as Mars? How can we protect our planet? Five known mass extinction has happened to the earth already, how can scientists stop another one from happening? A mass extinction on Earth happened 25 years ago and that wiped out approximately 90% of life on the earth at that time. This was triggered by a collision with a comet or asteroid. Can this happen again? What can be done to save our planet Earth?

There have been 5 known mass level extinctions in Earth's history; these events are characterized by the marked decline of biodiversity which mark the end of a geologic period" (Matthews 11-4-1). Not only has earth had problems with asteroids and meters, but scientist have discovered evidence that a meteor impact may have been the trigger to the collapse of civilizations more than 4,000 years ago. Studies that scientists have done in southern Iraq could possibly point to the Middle East being struck by a large crater. "The catastrophic effect of these could explain the mystery of why so many early cultures went into sudden decline 2300 BC" (Matthews 11-4-1).

Another problem that earth is faced with is the solar events that pose a serious problem to Earth. "A well placed solar ejection could...

Many scientists believe that Earth could be destroyed if hit by an asteroid. Most scientists have accepted findings that the earth was one time hit by an asteroid or meteor. However, most scientists do not know the exact place that this happened.
Another problem faced by earth is the temperature change. "Most researchers who focus on climatic changes throughout history explain that a change in just a few degrees can and will have lasting planet wise effects-most of these effects are detrimental to life-including human life" (Davis 1). Nuclear war would not only hurt the earth immediately, but also have far lasting affects. In fact, scientists believe that the effects of smoke and ash have already happened to the earth once about 65 million years ago. "We not know that an asteroid, roughly the size of Mount Everest, slammed into what is today the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. About once every 30 to 60 million years, something devastating occurs on our planet" (Davis 1). Other planets have faced asteroids as well as other problems. Mars is one of them.

Earth's is losing oxygen because the net production of free oxygen is declining. One reason for this is the destruction of the forests of the Earth even though we know that we need the forests. "Mars was blown away by a massive planetary impact -- whereas in our case, we are in…

Environmental Hazards as a Consequence of Crude Oil/Natural Gas Exploration, Transportation, Refining and Storage Ever since crude oil was first successfully drilled in the U.S. In Titusville, Pennsylvania, in 1859, the demand for oil has only been increasing over the years in countries all over the world. (Camden, 1883) Crude oil, from which various petroleum products are obtained, is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon component found trapped in rocks below the

International Regulation of Tourism in Antarctica Since the mid-1980s, Antarctica has been an increasingly popular tourist destination, despite the relative danger of visiting the largest, least explored -- and arguably least understood -- continent on earth. Beginning with the 1959 treaty establishing Antarctica as an international zone free of claims of sovereignty by nation's that had been instrumental in establishing research stations there, there has been almost constant negotiation about how

Gaia Hypothesis and Daisy World The development of the Gaia Hypothesis is described with some emphasis on how the concept has evolved in response to other scientist's skepticism. The Gaia concept itself is described and discussed. A possible means for reconciliation of the holistic Gaia hypothesis with reductionist thinking is discussed. I conclude by summarizing what the paper has accomplished. The Gaia Hypothesis was first published by James E. Lovelock in 1972

Christian Biotechnology: Not a Contradiction in Terms Presented with the idea of "Bioethics" most people in the scientific community today immediately get the impression of repressive, Luddite forces wishing to stifle research and advancement in the name of morality and God. Unfortunately, this stereotype too often holds true. If one looks over the many independent sites on the Internet regarding bioethics, reads popular magazines and publications, or browses library shelves for

Search for Extraterrestrial Life: The Existence of Non-Human Intelligent Beings in Our Galaxy The possibility of extraterrestrial life has always intrigued philosophers, scientists, theologians and even lay people for centuries. The fascinating question of whether there are other intelligent creatures in space, however, remains unsolved despite technological advancements in science particularly because thus far, there still lacks conclusive evidence. Motivations for the search for non-human life range from scientific and philosophical

Global Warming Speech Ladies and gentlemen, issues pertaining to global warming have literally become part of our lives. Global warming is a topic that has elicited a lot of debate from the political cycles with aspiring presidential candidates, gubernatorial, and even senatorial aspirants making it their campaign gimmick. It has, in the same breath, become the subject of many scientific studies. Nevertheless, debates surrounding global warming have also been marred with
