¶ … Academic Interests in Attending Trinity College

Thank you in advance for your consideration of my application to become enrolled at Trinity College. I am confident that I am qualified, and if successful in my application, I am certain I will be a productive, active, and worthy contributor to the campus community.

Academic Interests

My interest in acquired wisdom past and present runs as deep as a river. My curiosity leads me to investigate the history of subjects that fascinate me and tug at my brain -- like a child tugging at my sleeve -- for additional knowledge. Art history is among the subjects that I am passionate about exploring. The very thought of being in a classroom with Professor Gordon, or Professor Raether, learning about European art and the development of styles and formats in the 18th and 19th Centuries, brings a smile to my face.

I certainly hope and plan to be able to take a course with Renaissance scholar Jean Cadogan and learn about the art that was being created in the Middle Ages. My interest in the history of the use of various mediums -- and in the personalities that created the great works in those periods of history -- stimulates me to want to learn more.

The history of religion is of profound interest to me because I have unresolved questions about my existence. I really believe I can help answer some of my hitherto unanswered questions through coursework in philosophy, anthropology, and other courses at Trinity College. Why am I here on this planet? What is my purpose? I see the world from my perspective but I have a powerful yearning to know the truth about our emergence as a human family. The big philosophical questions are out there for me to research, and I believe the profound stimulation -- and pedagogical competences -- offered by Trinity's professors and instructors, will help me answer these questions.

Principal Activities & Activities Beyond the Classroom

I have a very strong interest in the sustainability movement, in environmentalism, ecology, and community service that relates to those aspects of life. There is no doubt that the students of today will be accountable for the solutions of tomorrow when it comes to dealing with global climate change and other critical issues that we face on this planet.

Moreover I am very anxious to learn more about groups like Habitat for Humanity, and homeless shelters in the community, to make choices that have a positive impact on others.

On the night that he was in Memphis to drum up support for the union that had gone out on strike -- and just before he was assassinated -- Dr. Martin Luther King said: "The question is not, if I stop to help the sanitation workers what will happen to me? The question is, if I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?" I believe that should be the socially responsible philosophy students should embrace, especially when families are being foreclosed out of their homes, people have lost jobs, and are struggling in this economy.
