Advantages and Disadvantages of Nursing Theory

Theory is very important in nursing as it helps with guiding and informing practice, framing approaches, and understanding factors that impact health. Theory aids in enhancing and improving patient care and in supporting professional development. Because there are so many different theories of nursing, however, the judicial application of theory should be supported by evidence-based practice, with principles from nursing theories incorporated in practice once they are verified and validated by evidence. This paper looks at how theories are used in nursing, illustrates their application through my own personal experience, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using theories to guide nursing practice.

Nursing theories can range from broad and abstract grand theories to more specific middle-range theories; all in all, however, they tend to serve as frameworks to understand health, illness, and the human experience within the context of care (Im, 2021). These theories help by offering a systematic way of looking at nursing situations. The systematic way helps in identifying what is important and what is not in nursing approaches, thereby guiding the nures’s assessment, intervention, and evaluation of patients. For example, Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory emphasized the importance of the patient's environment in the healing process, which was used by nurses as a guide for addressing factors such as cleanliness, ventilation, and light to promote recovery (Mazzocca, 2023).

In my practice, I have used Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring to direct the care of a patient who was having severe anxiety due to a cancer diagnosis. Watson's theory focuses on caring relationships between nurses and their patients and harmony within the mind, body, and soul (Devi et al., 2022). I prioritized creating a supportive environment, actively listened to the patient's fears and concerns, and gave comfort and reassurance to aid in developing a sense of trust and mutual respect.

Another instance where I integrated a theory from another field was when I applied Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to nursing care. I used this theory while caring for a homeless patient who had been admitted for diabetes management. Understanding that basic physiological needs are important to have in place before higher-level needs (like self-actualization) can be addressed, I coordinated with the social work department to make sure the patient had access to shelter and meals upon discharge. This addressed the immediate health issue and helped to contribute to the patient's overall path towards better management of their condition in the long term.

There are several advantages to the use of theories in nursing practice. Theories are a foundation for nursing practice, first of all. They also help to guide research and focus education. They can be used to encourage critical thinking and inform decision-making that is based on evidence rather than guesswork or ingrained customs. Theories can also support interdisciplinary collaboration insofar as they incorporate or overlap with concepts from other fields; doing so helps to promote a holistic approach to patient care (Im, 2021).

There are, however, also disadvantages to using theories in practice. Some theories can be too abstract or complex, which makes them difficult to apply in specific clinical situations. There can be a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, which can hinder their effectiveness in day-to-day nursing practice. A rigid adherence to a specific theory can also limit the flexibility needed to adapt to unique patient needs or preferences (Im, 2021).
