Stelzer, C. (2006). "Competition between two planktonic rotifer species at different temperatures: an experimental test." Freshwater biology 51(12), pp.

This study attempted to determine the differences in the ingestion and digestion rates of two different types of bacteria that feed on the same substances when other factors of the experimental setting were manipulated. Specifically, the effects of temperature on the various ingestion and digestion rates of Synchaeta pectinata and Brachionus calyciflorus was studied in direct experimentation, with other factors in addition to temperature also being manipulated to determine what the exact influence of the temperature manipulations themselves was on the various mechanisms being examined.

A great deal of knowledge was already available on these two types of bacteria, so the author of this study was able to make a prediction and hypothesis with a fair degree of certainty. Synchaeta pectinata was predicted to have been superior at lower temperatures as far as digestion goes, whereas Brachionus calyciflorus was predicted to be a more successful eater at higher temperatures. This hypothesis was somewhat borne out by the research, but in a more complicated fashion than initially put forth. Instead, both bacterium's ingestion and digestion was seen to increase as the temperature was increased, but Brachionus calyciflorus showed much greater rates of increase than the Synchaeta pectinata bacteris, which basically upheld the hypothesis made by the author at the start.
