In order to insure future success, Apple only needs to continue on its current path. Steve Jobs recently announced that Apple would switch to the same Intel processors that power most other personal computers. Despite concerns from some in the technology press that the switch will reduce Apple's ability to differentiate its products from competitors, the move should benifit Apple. Relative performance will not be an issue as it has been in the past. Apple products have suffered from the perception of being slower than Intel PCs for much of their recent life, yet customers stil wanted Macintoshes. Apple will continue to differentiate itself from commodity PC manufacturers through careful design, high quality and the Macintosh operating system, which is generally regarded as superior to Microsoft's Windows, which powers most commodity PCs. Apple's consumer electronics and media sales have been an amazing success, and Apple shows signs of continued innovation in both fields. Most current computer products can be traced directly back to Apple, and those that cannot still bear the marks of Apple's influence. The first successful PC was the Apple II, which brought computing in to homes and schools. The Macintosh made graphical user interfaces affordable and accessable to users outside of research laboratories. Apple did not invent laptop computers, but it did make them practical and desirable, and its innovations continue to lead that market. The Macintosh has been a favorite among artists and content-creation professionals since its introduction, and remains so, despite the fact that competing products have been up to the task for several years. Apple's re-entry in to the consumer electronics market provides the company with needed diversity. The music downloading market is brand new, and true to form, Apple is leading it, for once, with market share as well as technology.
