Rosswurm and Larrabee model for improving diabetes clinic nursing practice

In principle, the Rosswurm and Larrabee nursing approach is an evidence-based-nursing-practice model designed to maximize the clinical value of empirical evidence in contemporary nursing practice (Donovan & Knobf, 2009; English-Long, Burkett, & McGee, 2009). It is intended as a practical means of allowing practicing clinicians to apply relevant information discovered in clinical practice to the overall process of identifying the need for changes in nursing practice in a manner that facilitates the implementation of those changes in clinical practice. It is based on the following six concepts: (1) Assessing the need for changes in nursing practices by identifying specific clinical problems; (2) Linking the identified problem with interventions and desired outcomes; (3) Synthesizing the best available empirical evidence; (4) Designing a specific change in nursing practice to achieve the desired outcome; (5) Implementing the designed practice and then evaluating it; and (6) Integrating and maintaining the implemented practice as a change in nursing practice (Donovan & Knobf, 2009; English-Long, Burkett, & McGee, 2009).

The Rosswurm and Larrabee nursing model is particularly appropriate and useful to the clinical environment of the adult diabetes clinic. That is because nature of the clinical responsibilities in the adult diabetes lend themselves directly to the conceptual process of collecting large volumes of empirical data over a long period of time of the type that is directly relevant to identifying potential areas of necessary clinical practice changes capable of improving the quality of patient care. That is largely a function of the fact that the adult diabetes clinic emphasizes the patient counselling and patient education roles of nurses in clinical practice (Hamric, Spross, & Hanson, 2009).
