Being an Educator in Nursing

Nursing educators normally combine their clinical expertise and the passion they have for teaching into a career that is rich and rewarding. They work in the classroom as well as the practice setting, they have the responsibility of preparing, and acting as mentors to the current and future nurse's generations. They teach in various patient care settings in order to provide continuing education to those likened nursing staff. They play a vital role when it comes to strengthening the nursing workforce as they act as role models at the same time providing the leadership that is needed for the implementation of evidence-based practice. They are responsible for designing, implementation, evaluation and revising of academic and continuing education programs that are being used by nurses. They include formal academic programs, which can lead to the certification of their degrees, as well as the informal continuing education programs that are designed for meeting the learning needs of individual nurses.

The nurse educators play a critical role in assuring that there are quality educational experiences, which prepare the nursing workforce for the ever-changing and diverse healthcare environment. These leaders document the outcomes of educational programs that can be used to guide students throughout their learning process (Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow, 2010).

Nursing educators have to be able to prepare, manage and evaluate budget of an education program. Nursing educators have to prepare a budget, manage and evaluate the budgets they have created. Nursing educators have a crucial role to play in the education programs. They are the ones with the responsibility of seeing that the education programs for the nurses are a success. Therefore, they need to properly budget for the education programs. They first need to be aware of the necessary educational programs, which are must for the students. They have to be aware of the necessary programs before they even start thinking of the budgets. After identification of the programs, the nursing educators are now required to prepare a budget that includes these programs. The budget should be prepared in such a way that the funds for the programs of highest priority are allocated first. After preparation of these budgets, the nursing educators have to make sure that they manage these budgets effectively. They have to make sure that the allocated funds are used appropriately as stipulated in the budget. This will help in making sure that the funds are used for what they were planned for. It reduces the chances of deviated from the stipulated budget. Another important thing that the nurse educators should do is carrying out an evaluation of the budget they have prepared (Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow, 2010).
