¶ … Bourdieu's theory habitus field explain relationship individual society? Your essay demonstrate understanding concepts discuss: Define habitus Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus and field provides a complex structural relationship between individuals and society. The concept of habitus refers to the series of values, dispositions, and attitudes that a person comes to take on as a consequence of the experiences that he or she goes through across his or her life. A field regards the greater environment involving agents and the social positions defining them.

An individual's position is the sum of several concepts within the respective person's life, such as the legislations present in the field, the agent's life experiences, and his or her capital. Bourdieu's theory of habitus and field provides an intriguing view concerning how a person's life experiences play an important role in determining the attitudes the respective individual is going to take on in a field within the social order.

A person's understanding of the environment he or she inhabits largely depends on experiences that shaped the respective individual's thinking in the past. The field virtually provides a complex explanation of the dialectical connection between the habitus and the environment in which it is present. The habitus is not an independent concept, as it is largely influenced by historical elements and a person's memory. As time passes people start to associate particular feelings with particular concepts and eventually consider these concepts to be established laws.

The actions an individual performs throughout his or her life depend on a combination of factors involving habitus, field, and capital. Social, economic, or cultural capital are all likely to intervene at this point, shaping the way that a person first perceives an action and then performs it. Even with the fact that people act on account of their past experiences, each person's actions is actually a combination of factors involving his or her present thinking and thinking that the respective person has put across in the past.

There is a relation of interdependency between individuals and society, taking into account that society is produced by each person's actions and each person's actions are determined by how society shaped the respective individual's understanding of the world. It would thus be impossible for someone to define the way that an individual behaves to either the field or the habitus associated with the person.

Practices are not to be reduced to either habitus or field but grow out of the "interrelationship" established at each point in time by the sets of relations represented by both." (Swartz 2012, p. 142) One of Bourdieu's principal intentions when devising the theory of habitus and field was to have people understand that they should not necessarily look at social.
