Campus Security: Asset Risk Assessment Though the basics of campus security may seem simple enough to an outsider, in performing a complete risk assessment for a college or university's campus in its entirety, it is easy to see that the task at hand is one that is extremely complex. The main goal of campus security is to protect and maintain its organization's assets. One can assess an asset in terms of an institution of higher learning by locating anything that brings in or maintains a source of monetary worth or value for its respective institution, and can include properties, cash, stock, inventories, property rights, and persons. Whether in looking at a student paying a yearly tuition or at a decades-old statue in the campus commons, it is clear that each provides a source of revenue or financial worth for the institution they are a part of and therefore require protection.

In order to maintain proper inventory, campus security must work directly with each and every office within a school that may handle assets including the business office, financial aid office, office of public relations, alumni relations, all of which handle the financial side of accumulating assets all the way down to the maintenance office who oversees the upkeep of more material campus assets such as buildings, statues, grounds, memorials etc. Monthly reports must be kept and maintained by each office and circulated within them in order to gauge the full scale of how these assets measure up from month to month. In doing so, campus security will be able to not only keep track of these assets throughout the academic year, but be more capable in creating accurate annual reports for employees, alumni, students and donors.
