The number of cancer deaths around the world has been calculated to be approximately four million each year with an overall incidence rate of 143 per 100,000 people per year. At both the national and community level, cancer registration schemes are essential to research into the nature and causation of cancer, to the preparation of health service resources and cancer control programs, and to the evaluation of their success.
