In terms of demographics, Phoenix has a population of 1.615 million people whereas Houston has a population of 2.303 million people. Houston is one of the largest cities in Texas. The population of the city of Phoenix constitutes of 46.5% whites, 6.8% blacks, 39.9% Hispanic, and 3.2% Asian, 1.8% mixed and the remaining 1.9% comprising of others. On the other hand, for the population in Houston, 49.3% are White (including Hispanic or Latino), 25.3% are Black and 0.4% are Native American, 5.3% are Asian, and 16.5% are from other races. In terms of household income, the average income in the city of Houston is $47,793 declining from the preceding value of $48,064. On the other hand, the average income in Phoenix recently experienced a 7.5 percent growth to $54,062. In the 2016 fiscal year, the average age of the population in Phoenix was 33.4 years. The native citizens in the city had an average age of 29.5 years, and were younger compared to foreign citizens who had an average age of 41.8 years. In contrast, the average age of the population in Houston was 33 years. The native citizens in the city had an average age of 28.4 years, and were younger compared to foreign citizens who had an average age of 40.2 years. Notably, based on statistics of the previous years, the population of Phoenix is becoming younger whereas that of Houston is becoming older (Data USA, 2018).
The housing situation for both cities is quite different. 41% of the population in Phoenix comprises of renters whereas Houston has a greater number at 56.8%. In addition, Burton Barr Central Library is a community free library. It is funded through donations. This library has a large collection of books, computer lab, story time room and activities for children. Maryvale Union Free School District is a public school that is sponsor by the government. This school offers multiple programs and sport opportunities for children. The main college in the community is Glendale community College, which been offering educational needs in the community since 1965.
In comparison, the main school in the area in the Jack Yates High School. This is a school that was formerly known as Ryan Middle School and was rebuilt by the Houston Independent School District. The school offers education to children of all races devoid of any discrimination. The renowned university in the locality is the University of Houston, which is acknowledged as a Tier One educational establishment for research and is the model institution for the University system of the county. The college that is close by is the Houston Community College, and provides higher education to majority of the people in the city. Furthermore, the city has its own public library system referred to as the Harris County Public Library. Taking into consideration emergency services within the region, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office provides police services to the residents. Stafford and South Houston have municipal fire departments that provide emergency response services in the area.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Maricopa County has a number of key strengths. There is opportunity for improved health care through the many hospitals in the county. On the other hand, there are perceptible weaknesses of the community. To begin with, construction poses safety hazard and gives rise to pollution. In addition, there is poor waste management, which necessitates significant improvement. In contrast, Harris County, which is situated in Houston, has a number of strengths and weaknesses. To begin with, there are impeccable health care services rendered by the county hospital district, together with three other major hospitals and numerous clinics. The healthcare services rendered in Phoenix are adequate and are associated to the fact that registered nursing is one of the degree courses with the highest number of students. Secondly, the transportation system within the county is effective and adequate. Nonetheless, there are weaknesses perceptible. To begin with, there is a need for proper drainage. In recent times, the county experienced flooding and the drainage system necessitates improvement. It is imperative to note that Houston is renowned for mining and oil exploration activities. In this regard, it is deemed that some parts of the city have poor transportation services owing to these services. In fact, according to Para (2017), Houston is one of the bottom-most ranked cities in terms of sustainability of transit systems. Houston ranked low for the reason that it is one of the highest car-dependent U.S. cities, with a small proportion of public transit journeys undertaken per capita.
Recommendations
The recommendations given for Phoenix analysis are having goals and objectives together with measurements for the improvement of the priority conditions. This encompasses improvement in healthcare, schools, environment, infrastructure, safety and medical facilities. On the other hand, with respect to the analysis of Houston city, the key recommendation for the community includes the improvement in drainage facilities, augmentation of the transportation network and also enhancement of emergency medical services (EMS).
