Comparison Contrast Ulysses By Joyce And The Odyssey By Homer Term Paper

Ulysses and Odyssey are on the surface two different stories dealing with different characters in different time period. Yet there is something about Joyce's Ulysses that constantly reminds you of Homer's Odyssey. It takes reader sometime to see the similarities between the two epics and to draw some interesting parallels between Homeric plot and Joyce's narrative. It must be understood from the very onset that it was Joyce was borrowed heavily from Homer's Odyssey thus making the latter a more original version. However original here refers to freshness of events that are presented in the two books and doesn't refer to creativity because when it comes to that, Joyce is absolutely a genius. Odyssey is not similar to Bloom in many ways yet there is one striking similarity and that is the nature of experiences both undergo in the epics and their reaction to those situations. Bloom is not your typical hero like Odyssey yet he is a hero nevertheless because like Odyssey he is not willing to give up in the face of numerous odds against him. However the nature of his problems differ from that of Odyssey's because while the former is trying to win over his wife, the latter is more interested in personal glorification and winning in the battlefields.
