Research Vision and Professional Competencies

Abstract

My goal as a psychology practitioner-scholar is to understand and promote the mental health of individuals in high-stress situations. I am particularly interested in how social and cultural factors can influence the development of mental health disorders. To do this, I plan to work in a setting that provides direct psychological services to individuals, such as a counseling center or a hospital. I would also like to conduct research and scholarship in order to further my understanding of the relationship between social and cultural factors and the development of mental health disorders. In order to pursue my future career as a professional psychologist, I will need to complete a high-level program at Capella University and specialize in an area of psychology, such as Social Psychology, which is relevant to my interests. Plus, I will need to obtain licensure and certification, which involves passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). To achieve my vision as a professional psychologist, I will use an action plan and develop a timeline with goals for completing my high-level program at Capella University, obtaining licensure and certification, developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for success in psychology, and understanding the ethical principles and professional standards that govern psychology practice. By creating a timeline and setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timed goals, I will be better able to achieve my vision as a professional psychologist.

Research Vision and Professional Competencies

My passion for psychology and its influence on mental health has been a major source of interest for me, both in my personal and professional life. I am especially intrigued by the ways in which social and cultural factors can affect the development of mental health disorders, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and other high-stress situations. My goal is to help in the area of prevention to reduce the risk of stress adversely impacting a person’s mental health in a high-stress environment—whether that is a result of a public health emergency, a professional situation, or anything else. This paper will discuss my research vision and my plan for achieving my academic and professional goals.

Application and Research Vision

My career vision as a psychology practitioner-scholar is to understand and promote the mental health of individuals in high-stress situations, such as those who are refugees, in the military, or who have experienced trauma. I am particularly interested in how social and cultural factors can influence the development of mental health disorders. To do this, I plan to work in a setting that provides direct psychological services to individuals, such as a counseling center or a hospital. Additionally, I would like to conduct research and scholarship in order to further my understanding of the relationship between social and cultural factors and the development of mental health disorders.

The readings from my Career Paths in Psychology text and the exploration of the Career Center and other resources have provided me with valuable information regarding the principles of professional practice in psychology. I have learned about the functions, responsibilities, and ethics of a professional psychologist, which will guide my work as I pursue my future vision. The information I have acquired has also informed my understanding of how to apply the findings from my literature review to my professional practice in psychology. I have become aware of the importance of understanding the context in which I am working, as well as the need to assess and address the unique needs of each individual. Furthermore, I have gained an appreciation for the complexity of the human experience, which will help me to provide more effective psychological services.

Moreover, the information gave me an invaluable insight into the various career paths that I could pursue within the field of psychology. After researching the potential roles, I was able to see how my own skills and interests could be applied to the different roles and the different areas of psychology. That helped me to focus on my current vision—the goal of preventing mental health problems related to high-stress environments. Thus, the knowledge I obtained from my readings has enabled me to gain insight on which career path I want to take and how to best prepare myself for it. My readings and explorations have given me a clearer vision of what I want to achieve in the field of psychology and how I can use my talents and passions to make a meaningful contribution to the profession.

As always, the knowledge I have acquired this quarter has been invaluable in helping me to formulate personally meaningful and relevant educational, career, and life goals. It has empowered me to understand the duties and expectations of a professional psychologist, and it has given me a good foundation for refining my career vision and so that I can better shape the way I will approach my future practice in psychology.

Professional Competencies

In order to be successful in my chosen career path, I need to develop a set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are essential for practice in psychology. These include critical thinking skills, such as the ability to analyze and evaluate information; decision-making skills, such as the capacity to make reasoned decisions; problem-solving skills, such as the capacity to identify and address issues; and evidence-based practices, such as the capacity to use research-based approaches. In addition to these points, it is important to develop cultural competence, which involves understanding and respecting the values, beliefs, and behaviors of diverse individuals and cultures. It is also important to cultivate ethical competencies, such as the ability to adhere to professional standards and ethical principles. Ultimately, I need to know the key responsibilities associated with positions related to my future career, such as providing direct psychological services, conducting research, and teaching.

In addition to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for success in my career path, I will also need to develop a range of other skills that are important for success in psychology. These include good communication and interpersonal skills, strong self-awareness, and the ability to work effectively with both individuals and teams. It is equally important to develop a strong understanding of the ethical principles and professional standards that govern psychology practice. It will be helpful as well to dive into the benefits of self-care and the importance of ongoing professional development so as to maintain my competency as a professional psychologist. This will help me to remain committed to providing quality psychological services that are based on best practices and evidence-based research.

As a professional psychologist, it is important for me to develop a strong understanding of ethical principles and professional standards that govern practice in psychology. This includes understanding the legal and ethical implications of providing psychological services, as well as being aware of any relevant state and federal laws and regulations. I will also need to be familiar with the code of ethics of the American Psychological Association (APA), as well as any other relevant codes of ethics. It is also important to understand the different ethical theories and the implications of each theory for psychological practice.

In addition to understanding ethical competencies, I also need to appreciate the key responsibilities associated with positions related to my future career. These include providing direct psychological services, conducting research, teaching, and supervising other professionals. Furthermore, I will want to know how to provide quality psychological services that are based on best practices and evidence-based research. Finally, I have to have a sense of the importance of self-care and the need for ongoing professional development in order to maintain my competency as a professional psychologist.

Professional Requirements

In order to pursue my future career as a professional psychologist, I will need to meet certain requirements. This includes completing a high-level program at Capella University, such as a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) or a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology (PhD). I will also need to specialize in an area of psychology, such as Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology or Developmental Psychology. Additionally, I will need to obtain licensure and certification, which involves passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and meeting other state-specific requirements. It is also important to be aware of any additional training or continuing education requirements that may be necessary. Finally, it is important to understand the accreditation practices and standards established by the American Psychological Association (APA) and other relevant organizations.

Action Plan

In order to achieve my vision as a professional psychologist, I will need to create an action plan that outlines the steps necessary for success. This includes completing a high-level program at Capella University, such as a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) or a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology (PhD), as well as specializing in an area of psychology, such as Social Psychology, Clinical Psychology or Developmental Psychology. To aid me in my professional endeavors, I will need to obtain licensure and certification, which involves passing the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and meeting other state-specific requirements. Further aid will come in the form of developing the pertinent knowledge, skills, and personal and professional attitudes necessary for success in the field of psychology, such as those skills and knowledge related to critical thinking, decision making, problem solving, evidence-based practices, cultural competence, and conflict resolution. There are already many theories and frameworks available for understanding each of these areas, and I intend to make full use of them. Furthermore, I need to understand the ethical principles and professional standards that govern psychology practice, as well as any additional training or continuing education requirements. To close out this section, I aim to become more familiar with the accreditation practices and standards established by the American Psychological Association (APA) and other relevant organizations.

In order to become more inclusive in my professional life, I can take a number of steps. Firstly, I can strive to create an environment that is open and welcoming to people from all backgrounds and experiences. Secondly, I can actively seek out opportunities to collaborate with people from different cultural backgrounds, and to learn from their perspectives. Thirdly, I can commit to educating myself on important topics such as diversity, inclusion and equity, and to being open to feedback from people from different backgrounds. Finally, I can make sure to recognize and celebrate the unique contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds. By taking these steps, I hope to create a more inclusive and equitable professional environment.
