Patient Internet Evaluation Guide for Newly Diagnosed Diabetes Patients As more people use the Internet to access health information, nurses need to become skilled in systematically reviewing websites so that they can guide patients to the most appropriate sites. The 5Cs website evaluation tool provides a structured guide to such evaluation, giving tips and suggesting key considerations. The 5 CS are the key areas that need to be addressed in a comprehensive evaluation - credibility, currency, content, construction and clarity (Roberts 2010).

Credibility

As anyone can develop a website, it is important that you know who has created the site and can check the person's credentials. Do they have both the knowledge and the expertise to be giving information and advice? Is there a specific author listed? If not it can be difficult to check the credibility of the writer and this can affect the reliability of the information. What qualifications do they have and what are these qualifications in?

However, some websites are built, then never reviewed, and information can quickly become out of date and in some cases, dangerous. Is the date the website was created stated? Is the site referenced? Check the reference list to see what the latest reference is. A 2006 reference suggests that the information was put together in either 2006 or later. Is the information on the website current?
Content

Are the aims of the website apparent? Read the introduction as it may explain why the website has been produced, for example, as a response to an increased incident of a particular disease n Are there products available for you to buy? The purpose of the site may be commercial, and the information contained may be biased towards these products n Check the website address (see credibility) n Is the information written in the first or third person? First person could indicate personal opinion, and bias…
