Work-family balance in diverse workplaces

Of all the challenges regarding the increasingly diverse demographic composition of the workforce today, the challenges posed by the difficulty balancing work and family is perhaps the greatest for management. This issue's cope touches in some measure upon all of the other issues combined regarding the 'problem' of workplace diversity. Women work more hours than before, thus they must balance their commitments between work and family. This means men are called upon to share more of the family burden, forcing today's male employee to cope with similar challenges as his female colleague with a family. Even families without small children must cope with the aging of their parent's generation, and individuals from different ethnic, racial, or cultural backgrounds may come to the workplace with different expectations of what it means to be part of a family, or a corporate culture. This is true on a global as well as on a national level, and will impact the ability to form a cohesive attitude on a work team.

One way to combat the difficulties of balancing work and family life, or the personal and the vocational has been to integrate some home comforts, such as day care, gyms, and even personal services into the corporate environment. This helps individuals to feel as if they do not have to choose between being good parents or good employees. It gives them personal places to connect with their families and areas to de-stress and reinvigorate their minds and body over the course of the workday. Also, incorporating education about different cultures and attitudes is another effective strategy for management. This can increase the ability for work not to simply seem like work, but to be invigorating for the individual's mind and life development.
