He helped us to understand more about his culture and beliefs, and we helped him to understand why he made us feel strange. In the time span of a few weeks, most of us were able to suspend prejudice where he was concerned, and simply see him as another human being on the same basic journey that we were all on - from birth to death and wherever we went after that. No one was forced to accept anyone else's beliefs, and everyone was encouraged to be who they are, while still keeping an open mind toward themselves and others. I do not know whether it will make them 'better people' in the societal sense, or whether they will always remember how they felt during that time and take those lessons with them. People can forget things, especially as time continues to pass and other life lessons appear that might contradict the past for some individuals. For me, though, I cannot imagine forgetting all that I was taught during that class and how important it is to be tolerant of others and try to understand them. Through learning to understand them, you also learn to understand yourself. I do not know what I could have learned throughout my education that would have been more important than that.
