Evacuation of a Residential Nursing Home

As a result of the recent disaster at the nursing home, a new evacuation plan is currently being written and reviewed. At approximately 2:00AM, a very heavy storm caused a huge tree to fall on the roof of the nursing home. This incident affected approximately twenty patients. Ten rooms, with two patients per room, had to be evacuated due to damages in the rood. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the accident. However, it has been noted that the only evacuation procedure that is in place for the nursing facility is one that in initiated during a fire. So, this paper will attempt to explain an evacuation plan for situations that do not involve fire.

When the tree fell up on the facility, only ten rooms were affected. However, it has been decided to move all of the residents from that side of the facility for safety measures. During the time of the remodeling, the residents will be first placed in any empty rooms throughout the facility or will be paired up with other residents who do not have room mates. The displaced residents will be carefully placed with other residents who are around the same age, have the same likes and dislikes, and are of the same sex. This will make their temporary transition as smooth as possible. The residents will be told that this move is only for a short time until the facility can get their rooms and repaired and remodeled.

If the facility runs out of room due to lack of beds or lack of peer support or roommates, the resident will be shipped to a sister facility, which is twenty miles away. If this move does occur for the displaced resident, then the family, the resident and all of the resident's nurses, doctors, and other staff will be informed of the move. The move will only be temporary as the room is remodeled. It is not anticipated that any resident who leaves this facility will be away more than six months. This is just a temporary evacuation plan that will be initiated as the facility is being repaired over the next few weeks.

If a family wishes to remove their loved from the facility to go home during the remodel, they must obtain permission from nursing home administrator. This is a possible option for the resident, however, changes or adjustment in the monthly fees will not apply.

In the future, all rooms within this facility will have an evacuation plan for situations such as a roof clasp, tornado, windows breaking, and etc...hung in every room where each employee and resident can clearly view it. Period drills will talk place within the facility every four to six months. These can be announced or unannounced.
