Solutions to Overcome the Emotional Barriers to Peace

The 4th edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defined Peace as an inner contentment. It is an emotion where one is satisfied and fulfilled and where he is agreeing that things happening with and about him are exactly what he hopes in life. People may believe that Peace is related to dreams or ambitions. And since it is continually sought in life, Peace can be seen as something difficult to achieve. However, Peace is more related to social interactions and relationships than by having a wish fulfilled. It is a state of mind that is more than getting a promotion, having a new car or experiencing a good vacation. It could be more attributed to giving and receiving care and affection and having a good family and social relationships.

There are barriers to Peace, one of which is emotional state. According to the 4th American Heritage Dictionary, Emotion is a part of the consciousness that involves feelings. Harboring feelings of anger, resentment or hostility affects one's life and it may lead to a difficult and lonely existence. Far worse, these feelings may influence not just the affected individual but also those who he interacts with. Fisher and Sharp said that resolving conflicts is important in addressing emotional barriers. They shared that when conflicts remain unsettled in an individual, he may retain the negative feelings he had about it and build on it until a resolution takes place.

However, seeking solution to conflicts is not an easy task. The conflict needs to be seen in a different perspective and it has to be accepted as not necessarily harmful and will actually help in the growth and development of a person. Contributing actions to the conflict also has to be recognized and weaknesses and imperfections have to be accepted. Awareness to these realities and acceptance of self and the other persons is also important.
