Financial Aid Appeal
Dear Admissions Committee,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this financial aid appeal with regards to my academic performance during the last term that I was enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and to provide an explanation of the extenuating circumstances that were detrimental to my performance. I would also like to outline how these events have been resolved and assure you of my commitment to improving my academic standing.
During the summer of 2021, my beloved grandmother fell ill, and her condition became progressively worse. I had originally planned to enroll at Central Piedmont Community College in the fall of that year to bring up my GPA, as advised by my academic advisor at UNCG. However, due to the seriousness of my grandmother's illness, I made the difficult decision to prioritize her care and support her during this challenging time.
Tragically, my grandmother passed away on January 24, 2022. Her loss deeply affected me, and I found that in my grief I could not return to my academic responsibilities. Understanding the importance of my education, I took on a job as a Security Officer in Charlotte, NC, to occupy my time and begin the healing process. This employment allowed me to find some stability in routine work. It also helped me to reflect, and I remembered that I needed to continue my education to fulfill the aspirations my grandmother held for me.
Consequently, I enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College in the fall of 2022 and have been dedicated to my studies ever since. I firmly believe that my grandmother would have wanted me to persevere and excel academically. I have been actively working on improving my focus, time management skills, and overall academic performance to ensure that I am able to successfully transition back to UNCG in the Fall of 2023.
Reflecting upon my previous term at UNCG, I acknowledge that my performance fell short of the expectations I hold for myself. However, I am confident that I have learned from this experience and have developed the necessary resilience and determination to overcome future challenges. I have created a strategic plan to ensure my academic success. Part of this plan is to obtain guidance from professors and to utilize campus resources such as tutoring and study groups. On top of this, I now have a disciplined study routine, realistic goals, and I maintain open communication with my instructors.
Returning to UNCG is of utmost importance to me, as it not only allows me to pursue my academic goals but also provides an opportunity to honor my grandmother's memory through my achievements. I am eager to immerse myself in the academic community at UNCG, where I can contribute to its diversity, engage in meaningful research, and participate in the community’s excellent extracurricular activities.
I kindly request that the Admissions Committee reconsiders my eligibility for financial aid at UNCG for the Fall 2023 semester. I genuinely believe that I deserve this chance to prove my commitment, determination, and potential to succeed and I am prepared to put forth my utmost effort and dedication to ensure that my performance at UNCG exceeds expectations.
