Future Considerations In our Stringer (2007 textbook, in Chapter 9, you will find the deepest probe into the meaning and generation of scientific knowledge and where action research stands as a research endeavor. The complex controversies surrounding the role and place of science in contemporary life are arrayed so the reader can consider the core ideas of influential theorists. From time to time in your readings, you have encountered brief commentaries about Kurt Lewin, considered the Father of Action Research.
The Burnes (2004) article gives a more in-depth portrayal of how Lewin's perspective evolved and compares Lewin's ideas with a number of contemporary strategies aimed at organizational change. Lewin did most of his work in the 1940's and 1950's; Burnes makes a strong case for the continuing practical relevance of Lewin's ideas. Kurt Lewin and the planned approach to change: A re- appraisal. Journal of Management Studies, 41(6), 977-1002. In Chapter 9 of our Stringer (2007) textbook, two general perspectives are presented, the modern and the post-modern. In your response: 1.Apply and cite supportive research to explain which of these perspectives you would you want to have inform and guide organizational actions. The author of this report decided to combine and fuse what is said by Stringer and what is said by others.
A secondary source is quoted by saying the following: "The emergence of post-modern theory has also shaped the development of Action Research. While modernism was founded on assumptions about objective truth and rationalistic notions of linear progress, post-modern thought is more accepting of fragmentation, heterogeneity and the ephemeral." The source then goes on to say that post-modernism has its roots with the counter-culture movements of the 1960's and such (Charles & Ward, 2007).
Given that and given the definitions offered both by Stringer and this other source, the author would definitely stick with modern because the post-modern strain would seem to be a little off-kilter from what should be occurring. Indeed, objectivity and rationality should be the foundations of any research in the opinion of the author of this response (Charles & Ward, 2007; Stringer, 2007). 2.Additionally apply and cite relevant information from the Burnes article to explain if and why you will keep using Lewin's methods.
As noted by Burnes, many people assailed (and still do) the work of Lewin by saying that it assumes that organizations are in a stable state and thus they would only work for small groups and organizations. However, Lewin notes that problems and tumult can exist and that they can exist at many levels including at the broader societal level.
Further, Lewin himself noted that "group life is never without change, merely differences in the amount and type of change exist." That sounds common-sense, accurate and a good reason to stick with what Lewin asserted to be true. Further, many people disagreed with his "planned" approach but it is the way that any organization or group should proceed. Plans might need to change…but there needs to be a general strategy in place before any real change or progress can be made (Burnes, 2004).
2ND PAGE DISCUSSION POST 2 Future considerations: Part 2 Required Reference Material: Be sure to apply and cite sources within your initial post response and also reference the sources at the end of your response (using APA formatting). Stringer (2007) offers a number of ideas about the next generation of action research in Chapter 9. 1.Apply and cite relevant information from our textbook when writing your own evaluation of the synthesis of ideas that will inform and guide the next generation of action researchers.
One point that Stringer makes is noted when he says that action research is considered scientific only when the term "science" is defined. Indeed, there is a massive amount of debate and scuttlebutt out there about what is science, what it is not, how it is being attacked and so forth. Stringer himself admits in the text that action research does NOT follow the traditional scientific method (Stringer, 2007) 2.Share your conclusions about the keys to a successful action research project. There needs to be a few things.
First, the subject of the research needs to be figured out and defined ahead of time. Second, any preconceived notions or presumptions that are not established or proven by prior facts should be disregarded and cast aside as this creates the.
