. Describe the types of stimuli that control the secretion of hormones.

Generally speaking, hormone levels are controlled through negative feedback mechanisms within the body. Here, if a hormone increases in propensity, the body will automatically inhibit is future release to compensate for the increase. In addition, there are various types of stimuli that can further regulate the secretion of hormones within the body. For example, hormonal stimuli are the release of hormones in response to the other endocrine glands within the body. Likewise neural stimuli are in reference to the release of hormones due to neural stimulation. Essentially there are three primary tuples of stimuli that control hormone secretion. Hormonal stimuli are the body’s response to an increase or decrease in another hormone. Humoral stimuli are stimuli that responds to changes in other factors or fluids such as ion concentration within the bloodstream. Finally neural stimuli are hormone responses to changes in the nervous system.

2. Describe the locations, functions, and hormones of the thyroid gland and parathyroid

The thyroid gland is located near the trachea and below the larynx. It is butterfly shaped and functions as a means to regulate the body’s use of energy. It does this by using iodine from food we consume to secrete various hormones throughout the body. These hormones ultimately regulate how energy is stored and used throughout the body. The parathyroid gland is located directly behind the thyroid gland. These glands control the storage and usage of calcium throughout the blood stream (Foster, 2002).
