Future of Nursing

Efficient nursing practice is anchored on education and training of nurses. Nurses must therefore achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that allows for academic progression. This is integral in transforming the healthcare landscape in the United States (Alberta Association of Registered Nurses, 2003). The Institute of Medicine's Recommendation 4, advocates for increasing the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degree to 80% by the year 2020. Recommendation five still touches on matters education and advocates for doubling the number of nurses with doctorate degree by 2020. Recommendation six finally calls for ensuring that nurses engage in life long learning.

By increasing my level of education, the decision I will be making will be supported with evidence-based rationale. I will use appropriate information and resources that enhance patient care and achievement of desired patient outcomes. My education will enable me to demonstrate critical thinking when it comes to collecting and interpreting data, planning, implementing and evaluating aspects of the nursing care. I will exercise reasonable judgment and set justifiable priorities in discharging my duties as a nurse. Enhanced education will enable me to practice within my own level of competence. I will document timely, accurate reports of data collection to interpret, plan, implement and evaluate my practice (Alberta Association of Registered Nurses, 2003). The education will enable me to apply my nursing knowledge and skills in providing safe, competent and ethical care (Waters, 2001). I will carry out my activities within the HPA regulations. Attaining the baccalaureate will enable me adhere to the code of ethics. I will report unskilled practice and professional misconduct that happens around me to appropriate person, agency, or professional body. I will advocate for protection and promotion of my client's right to autonomy, respect, privacy and dignity. I will ensure that my relationship with my clients is therapeutic and professional (White, 2001). My practice environment will enable me provide competent and ethical nursing care.

The current job market demands a lot from those in the nursing practice especially with regards to provision of services. Those of us in the nursing practice must therefore collaborate with clients and other health professional to enhance service delivery. Receiving the Baccalaureate will make me competent in the sense that I will collaborate with my clients and other healthcare professionals in care planning, implementation and evaluation. I will effectively use aspects of communication and team building to help enhance client care. Nurses, especially the registered ones, as you know, are accountable for the supervision of other healthcare team members and nursing students (Yeo & Moorhouse, 1996). To effectively do this, I have to be conversant with the decision making standard for nurses. Mastery of these standards is integral and is a sign that one is competent. I will therefore explain nursing care to clients and others.
